Easy to use phrase book

I am a perpetual traveler, writer and blogger and using different local languages is something I deal with on a daily basis.

I feel lucky to have found this series of phrasebooks, because they are written to teach you the basics in a quick fashion.

My personal goal is not fluency, but rather to show respect for the locals by using some of their own language, as well as being able to communicate basic ideas as well.

These books have been doing that well for me!

They are also very user friendly on my iPhone and iPad, and that saves me traveling with paper books which are basically impossible when you have to live/travel light.

I look forward to and future language phrase books thay come up with.

This short book was a great deal of help as I listened to an auditory French Language program and wanted to actually see how many letters were being left out of each word!

Handy and dandy

It's pretty good, but you do need to have some knowledge of how French is pronounced, since the pronunciation guides aren't all that helpful. They also don't tell you how words or expressions are accented: what syllable gets the stress. It's good for very basic vocab and phrases, however, which is all I wanted for a recent trip. One flaw: formatting on the Kindle wasn't consistent. I'd re-size a page to see all of the entries, and then when I went to the next page, the app flipped back to a former format. And it was free.

Thrill Ride of a Novel

Combine the movie Taken with the movie Dusk to Dawn and you get a bit of an idea of the breakneck pace and action of this book. It's a modern action thriller with a bit of paranormal thrown in for an extra kick.
A young girl is kidnapped off the street by a murderous religious cult. A man wrongly imprisoned in a Mexican jail is chosen to be the "righteous messenger" for an ancient evil entity and sent on a mission across the desert. A small town Texas sheriff and a high class psychologist join forces to take on the cult. Add an outlaw biker gang, a few corrupt federales, a disfigured psychotic henchman, and an undead virgin army. Are you getting the picture?
The first couple of chapters set up the plot and introduce us to the characters. The good guys are likable and funny. The bad guys are beyond evil. The action begins with the kidnapping and the clock is set for 24 hours. What takes place within one day for all these characters will have you on the edge of your seat for every chapter. When time runs out, the fate of the world is at stake. Can a handful of ordinary people defeat a supernatural evil entity? Hmm, I wonder.
If you enjoy fast paced, high energy movies and books, this one should be on your reading list. It's a lot of fun and definitely holds your interest throughout. The author doesn't pull punches with his prose so there is a good deal of profanity and violence. Be forewarned if that kind of thing offends you. The only aspect that I was just a little disappointed with was the ending. It kind of leaves you hanging without there being mention of a sequel. If so, I definitely want to read it.
I haven't read any other works by Adam Mansbach but this book certainly makes we want to check out what else he's done. I can see this book being made into a killer action movie. Are you out there Quentin Tarantino?

You've gotta have heart -- and how!

You won't go the f--- to sleep while reading Adam Mansbach's latest novel. In fact, "The Dead Run" may keep you up late as you navigate a twisting path decorated with chills, grossouts, head-bashing encounters and supernatural shenanigans. The plot centers on a sometimes likable prisoner named Jess Galvan, who is charged with carrying a live and beating heart (you read that right) across the Tex-Mex desert in a desperate try to save himself and a few others. That's no easy job when you're up against characters that include a centuries-old Aztec, his slimy son, a flesh-eating virgin army (you read that right, too) and a killer motorcycle gang, while only a few people are on your side, most notably an honest Texas lawman, a 16-year-old girl, and a therapist whose instincts are as good as her looks. In the hands of a lesser writer, the horror-happenings in "The Dead Run" might seem overly far out, but from the novel's tense prologue to its unexpected climax, Mansbach will make a believer of you.

Bizzare, hip, fast-paced with some mystical nonsense tossed in for good measure

When Jess Galvan walked into that seedy bar in Mexico, his goal was to carry a package across the border and use his earnings against his crazy ex-wife in a custody battle for their daughter. Instead, a poorly timed act of altruism lands Galvan in a Mexican prison inhabited by the legendary El Cucuy.

Returning home from a lousy day at the community swimming pool, Sherry Richards is kidnapped and becomes another statistic in a growing succession of sixteen year-old females who have disappeared. Her mother, recently rehabilitated from a powerful cult, calls the police.

Sheriff Bob Nichols, of the woefully understaffed Del Verde County office, believes Sherry is just another runaway until the mother's psychiatrist, Ruth Cantwell, contacts him. She supports the mother's fears and convinces Nichols to jump into her bright red Prius and pay a visit to the cult compound.

The Dead Run, a story that involves a freakish cult, ancient legends, supernatural beings, patriotic bikers, a still beating heart in a box, and a dangerous trek through the desert inhabited by the Virgin Army of zombie girls, is unquestionably bizarre. The writing is hip, gritty, violent, and fast-paced with some laugh out loud moments. The fact that the writer is also the author of the hysterical "children's" book, Go the (BEEP) to Sleep, makes the dark humor of this outlandish story even more wicked.

Now, any horror story that includes the supernatural is going to be a stretch of the imagination. The Dead Run, however, requires an elastic contortion of the reader's imagination; sometimes asking much patience and indulgence on the reader's part. While I enjoyed the chapters the covered Galvan's horrific desert trek or the sheriff's misadventures with the psychiatrist, I felt the story was interrupted too often by mystical nonsense. When one of the characters bathes in a tub filled with virgin blood (kept at a constant body temperature) while telepathically communicating with his father, my face did a solid palm slap while my eyes rolled to the back of my head.

Don't get me wrong, I liked the book and most of the characters, but when it came to the end and I realized there would be a sequel, I didn't feel pressed to anxiously await the next one. It was a fun ride, but I'm okay if I'm left in the desert with the Virgin Army of zombies.

An Okay Read

Surrender to the Earl by Gayle Callen was a book I wanted to enjoy, after all Historical Romance's usually are good for a somewhat interesting read. This was a Victorian era romance that never quite lived up to my expectations, especially given the description of our heroine and the catch phrase on the back of the book.

She wanted a favor, not a fiancé.

This alone piqued my curiosity. I had high hopes for Audrey Blake, a widow that has been blind since childhood. We learn in the beginning of the story that her family has sheltered and ignored her most of her life, it's not until our hero, Robert enters the story that we see glimmers of a change. Robert, the Earl of Knighsbridge feels duty-bound to Audrey due to what he perceives as a `great wrong' to Audrey's deceased husband with whom he served overseas. When Audrey approaches him with a plea, he agrees to help her leave her family home and claim the property that is rightfully hers. That is not as easy as it sounds due to her father, it becomes necessary for Robert to propose, something Audrey only agrees to because it's necessary. Of course, the engagement is only temporary and both will be able to go back to status quo afterward... or will they?

For most of the story we learn a lot of background on Audrey, she harbors a lot of pain from her marriage to Martin, and also from her family's treatment of her, as if she were an invalid. It seems that 98% of the novel is about that, and finally in the last 2% we get our happy ending. If anything bothered me in the story, it was Audrey's inability to recognize a difference in relationships; to recognize that she'd found a very special someone. It was frustrating that she kept brushing it off so profusely, it's only by sheer miracle and extreme patience on the part of Robert that we do get our happy ending.

While I enjoyed the basic premise of the story, I really feel that for most of the book we are moving at too slow a pace, and in the last 20 pages it's decided that it's "TIME FOR A HAPPY ENDING" so everything moves at the speed of light to get us to the happy ending. It's for that reason that I am giving Surrender to the Earl 3/5 stars. Hopefully in her next book in this series, Gayle Callen will pace the story better and make the characters more realistic.

Brides of Redemption Trilogy Continues

In the "Brides of Redemption" trilogy, three handsome, mysterious, titled soldiers who have fought in India and Afghanistan return to England to try and make amends, feeling responsible for the deaths of three of their fellow soldiers. As with all of Ms. Callen's writings, the historical accuracy of the time is as engaging as the storylines and characters. In this story, one that has errie undertones of what soldiers currently experience in the modern Afghanistan War, a decision made out of compassion for prisoners has led to the same prisoners returning to attack the regiment, killing the commander and two other soldiers. Feeling they need to do more than provide a simply apology, they are determined to do whatever they can to help these soldier's families; what they do not expect, is to find love. In the first book of the series, Michael, Lord Blackstone finds love with Cecilia, the commander's daughter who he marries by proxy from India so that she can keep her inheritance, only to return and decide to make a real marriage, but not without some struggle.

In this second book, Robert Henslow, Earl of Knightsbridge, visits the widow of another soldier lost, Martin Blake, determined to see if he can aid her in any way in order to make amends for her husband's death. He discovers, surprisingly, that Mrs. Blake is blind and had not only lost her husband, but much more. While visiting, he sees that she is living as a virtual prisoner in her father's home due to her blindness, not because of her limitations, but because her family feels she is limited by her inability to see. Ms. Callen has provided the reader with an interesting depth into this blind noblewoman and how she is able to overcome her disability in this era where any disability is shunned by society. Audrey sees more than most people who can with the help of her childhood friend and servant Molly. Since losing her sight at the age of seven from scarlet fever, her mother taught her to be independent and strong. Upon her mother's death, and her failed marriage, as Martin married her simply for her dowry in order to buy his commision, it is her father and his influence on her brother and sister, not her blindness that is holding her captive. Since her husband's death, she has wanted to move to her inherited property Rose Cottage. She asks Robert for his help, and he willingly offers to help her move to Rose Cottage by pretending a false engagement. Robert begins to develop feelings for the strong, beautiful and accomplished widow, admiring her for her strength and determination to successfully overcome her limitations. Audrey thought all would be well when she moved to Rose Cottage, determined to take over the responsibility of her new home and then end the false engagement with Robert. It is not Audrey's blindness that limits her from truly being independent, it is because she is emotionally blind, inhibited by her social isolation and lack of love from her first husband. Things become complicated as the servants at Rose Cottage are acting strangely and even more confusing for her, Audrey is forming a romantic attraction to Robert and is overwhelmed by his sensual advances. With so many inner struggles and secrets to be uncovered, will they be able to overcome all when everything is revealed and find true love?

I enjoyed this book, just like every other Gayle Callen historical romance and look forward to the Duke of Rothford's story in the third book of the "Brides of Redemption" trilogy. Since Gayle Callen started writing in the late 1990's, her books have not disappointed fans of historical romance. This reviewer got hooked, starting with her medieval historicals, and then more engaged with the "His" trilogy. It has been the Regency and Victorian Eras that Ms. Callen has shined. Three favorites, The Lord Next Door, The Duke in Disguise, and The Viscount in Her Bedroom, have delighted romance fans with their handsome, sensual rogues. In the "Scandalous" trilogy, Ms. Callen successfully writes about notoriously handsome, secretive rakes, with the added mystery and sexual tension she is known for. Her books are difficult to put down. I highly recommend this series. Any of this author's historical romances and/or series make any day, rain or shine, a good day!

When Robert Henslow, the Earl of Knightsbridge visits Mrs. Audrey Blake, the widow of one of his fallen comrades of war to give her his condolences, he finds a very capable blind woman who is being kept a virtual prisoner in her father's home. When Audrey begs Robert to help her escape from her father's hold and take her to the only good thing her deceased husband left her, his country home, Robert devises a plan that will whisk her away from the overbearing man, he proposes marriage. Ah, but is the proposal a real one or just a ruse to give Audrey her first taste of freedom since she lost her sight to a fever at age seven.

Audrey reluctantly agrees to this ruse but swears to never marry again and her deceived as she was with her first husband, but things aren't as easy as they seem. Although Audrey finally has her dream home, Rose Cottage, she finds herself yearning the understanding and warmth that the Earl of Knightsbridge has so easily given her since the first meeting. Robert is in awe of all that Audrey can accomplish on her own as a blind woman and in his dealings with her, he opens himself to the possibility that maybe the fake engagement should be a real one. Convincing the finally free Audrey however will be a tremendous task, but one that Robert does not shy away from.

When Audrey's petulant sister Blythe appears at Audrey's doorstep to take in Rose Cottage and see how her blind sister is getting on, she is greeted by both Robert and Audrey, who are both extremely wary of Blythe's intentions, as Blythe has never really gotten on well with her sister. Poor Audrey must deal now with her sister, who is trying to make amends for years of indifference, the Earl who has begun to rain his attentions on her in a rather militant but effective manner, and the house staff, who clearly are keeping secrets from their lady and would prefer she left Rose Cottage.

Just when one thinks there may be a break for Audrey, truths air that may change her change her mind and heart forever, because how many times can a woman be hurt before she shuts her heart away? I thoroughly enjoyed reading Surrender To The Earl by Gayle Callen. I found Audrey's story to be compelling. Robert Henslow, once a cocky man believing all was for him, returns from war a changed man. A patient, and understanding man that would be a good husband only if Audrey only would open her heart. I liked how this Gayle Callen told both Audrey's and Robert's stories so well that I really got a feel for them. Robert's determination to break down Audrey's wall was so commendable that I actually wanted him for myself. Surrender To The Earl is the first of Gayle Callen's books that I have read and I find myself downloading more at this very moment!

Horan's ambitious first novel is a fictionalization of the life of Mamah Borthwick Cheney, best known as the woman who wrecked Frank Lloyd Wright's first marriage. Despite the title, this is not a romance, but a portrayal of an independent, educated woman at odds with the restrictions of the early 20th century. Frank and Mamah, both married and with children, met when Mamah's husband, Edwin, commissioned Frank to design a house. Their affair became the stuff of headlines when they left their families to live and travel together, going first to Germany, where Mamah found rewarding work doing scholarly translations of Swedish feminist Ellen Key's books. Frank and Mamah eventually settled in Wisconsin, where they were hounded by a scandal-hungry press, with tragic repercussions. Horan puts considerable effort into recreating Frank's vibrant, overwhelming personality, but her primary interest is in Mamah, who pursued her intellectual interests and love for Frank at great personal cost. As is often the case when a life story is novelized, historical fact inconveniently intrudes: Mamah's life is cut short in the most unexpected and violent of ways, leaving the narrative to crawl toward a startlingly quiet conclusion. In 1904, Frank Lloyd Wright started work on a house for an Oak Park couple, Edwin and Mamah Cheney, and, before long, he and Mamah had begun a scandalous affair. In her first novel, Horan, viewing the relationship from Mamah’s perspective, does well to avoid serving up a bodice-ripper for the smart set. If anything, she cleaves too faithfully to the sources, occasionally giving her story the feel of a dissertation masquerading as a novel. But she succeeds in conveying the emotional center of her protagonist, whom she paints as a proto-feminist, an educated woman fettered by the role of bourgeois matriarch. Horan best evokes Mamah’s troubled personality by means of delicately rendered reflections on the power of the natural world, from which her lover drew inspiration: watching her children rapturously observe a squirrel as it pulls apart wheat buds or taking pride in the way the house that Wright built for them in Wisconsin frames the landscape.

Fascinating look at the internal life of Wright and his lover

I have studied the work and bio of Frank Lloyd Wright for many years, even traveling to his Western headquarters, Taliesen West, and touring homes he built in four cities. I was well aware of his strengths and faults, but little has been published about the women in his wife, other than his domineering, smothering mother and his strident, domineering third (and last) wife. (I'm counting Mamah Borthwick, his lover for about a half-dozen years, as a second wife, since they would have married if his first wife had granted him a divorce; he and Borthwick lived together for several years).

Wright's towering ego is well known and well documented. By choosing to look at Wright and his work through the eyes of Mamah, his lover, in this fictionalized historical tale, Horan brings new insight into the demons and angels that inspired his vision. Wright's well-documented narcissism and inability to control himself personally is examined as well, but not as the fatal flaws offered by most biographers, but as components of an immensely complex and genius personality.

Mamah's (first) husband was first to see Wright's vision but Mamah was the one to embrace it wholly as Wright set about building them a home in Oak Park, not far from his own house. Wright was a star on the rise at that time, accepting commissions almost faster than he could manage them, but the affair he and Mamah embarked upon, which caused her to abandon her children, led to considerable scandal and major setbacks to his business.

Mamah was a recognized scholar and intellect until she was subsumed into a loveless marriage by the conventions of the time. In Wright she found the outlet for her passions and the independence she longed for, and the support and acceptance to rebuild her professional life, which became linked with that of the feminist Swedish scholar Ellen Keyes. Mamah's story, and that of the feminists of her time, is largely lost to history, and for reminding us of those seminal and important figures alone Horan deserves a deep bow.

Horan's work also exumes many litle-known facts about Wright and his times: his love for rural Wisconsin, where he grew up; his fascination with Japan and business in buying and selling Japanese antiguities; and his admiration for the classic Tuscan homes of northern Italy. As this book documents the times in which Wright was shaping his own vision with the help and guidance of Mamah, we can better understand the architecture for which he became so famous.

For those familiar with Wrights biography, the tragic end to his and mamah's affair is well known. For others, it will come as a shock. Horan is simply masterful in describing the events as they must have occurred.

I enjoyed the book tremendously, but I have one major quibble: Horan offers little documentation for her narrative for the reader who might want to learn as much as she does. As one generally familiar with the story I find it authemtic, but an appendix elaborating on the sources Horan used would add to the book's credibility.

TO BE PERFECTLY FRANK...

Frank Lloyd Wright was, and is, considered by many to be an architectural visionary. His Prarie homes were organic in nature and designed to blend into the landscape rather than compete with it.

Frank himself could hardly be considered as a man who "blended into the landscape" and his unconventional affair with Mamah Borthwick Cheney, a married woman with two children, resulted in tragedy both personal and professional

Author Nancy Horan's historical novel takes you into the lives and minds of this unusual couple and explores their relationship and its effect the people who loved them as well as those on the periphery of their passion.

We are drawn into the inner thoughts of Mameh, an accomplished woman in her own right.....college graduate, fluent in several languages.....and her attempt to "stop standing on the side of life watching it float by" and instead "swim in the river and feel it's current". In an era when women were expected to quash any desire for personal growth and "act happy", Mameh's personal conflict forced her to make choices that provided temporary satisfaction, but were ultimately disasterous.

Could it be that you, like me, will become so consumed by Horan's vivid portrayal of this couple that you will find yourself searching the internet for more information about "what happened after" Horan's tale ends.

Astonishingly fresh and riveting novel

No matter your allegiance to the narcissistic genius who was Frank Lloyd Wright, it is Mamah Cheney who will mesmerize you with her intelligence, sensitivity and straightforward innocence. To dare to write such a complicated true story and to succeed so masterfully is a feat few authors can achieve. Nancy Horan is a remarkably gifted writer who brings you close to the complex love affair between Mamah and Frank and grips you with her elqouent prose. I have not enjoyed a book as much in a very long time. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to dive into an extremely satisfying novel and not emerge from its spell until you turn the last page.
