way exceeded my expectations
By Amazon Customer
I had to add a review because this book merits high praise. Admittedly, I didn't have high expectations based on the blurb.. It sounded too cliche. Jonathan's character didn't seem very interesting in previous books. Thomasina sounded like a genre stock character.
However, I could not have been more wrong.
Both H & h are multi-faceted and have hidden depths. Jonathan is a great combination of sardonic, ambitious and brave while Tommy is incredibly courageous and tender. Neither are slutty/rake/virgins, both are honest. They both get that they are beautiful but don't take it too seriously. There are a lot of other interesting characters but they do not take away from the H & h.
There are no misunderstandings, martyred desperation or stupidity just to move the story along. Instead, both characters face a series of financial obstacles with wit, grace, creativity and hard work. The happy ending really IS a happy ending because the characters are rewarded for their courage, effort and love. All this not to mention beautiful writing and great humor.
All elements are done well here; characters, plot & style. I realize this isn't classic literature but this is art and is very much appreciated!
For those familiar with the books: The Redmond family has changed and I can't wait to see what it will be like when Lyon (the eldest sibling gone missing) comes home.

What happened??
By Claire
Julie Anne Long is one of my true favorites: I've bought extra copies of some of her books to give to friends, I've reread a few of them more than once, I have them in paperback AND Kindle so they are with me even when I travel. So I thought I was delaying gratification by not reading the book the day it came out. Wrong. It Happened One Midnight was so disappointing! First of all, it was as if the author forgot the timeframe in which the novel was taking place: the language was colloquial 21st century ("color me...induced"????) and made no pretense whatsoever of conforming to 19th century reality; the actions of the characters, specially the women, were also anachronistic (pulling off her clothes in the middle of the road???) That said, Ms Long's stories are usually so good that I could overlook these things but this story moved very slowly and the dialogue was less witty than usual. I really couldn't feel the romance in this story and the connection between H/h just didn't come across. I had set aside a full afternoon to read this book because I usually can't put her books down -- turns out that wasn't necessary cause it was very "put-downable"! In fact, I was looking for excuses to go do other things. Unfortunately, this book also really felt as if it was written according to a formula. They probably all are but this one FELT like it was. There were a number of scenes which just sat like blobs in this book and which didn't seem to advance the plot at all and just felt awkward. Finally, there were a lot of typos and grammatical errors ("her" instead of "his", and vice versa) -- where are the editors???
So, in all I cannot recommend this book. I STRONGLY recommend Ms Long's other works, like "What I did for a Duke" and "How the Marquess was won" or "The Runaway Duke", but this one doesn't even begin to meet the high bar set by those other works.

very angry and very disappointed!SPOILER WARNING!
By allana
spoiler warning!
I am so very angry with the content of this book and cannot believe this is the same woman who wrote 'What I did for a duke' and 'Like no other lover'.The reasons why,
1.You have to wait for ever before anything happens between the h/h which would have been fine if there had been any sensuality or friction between them ,there was absolutely none!Yes they exchanged witty banter but it was more of what 2013 couples would ,not in regency era.He immediately does what she tells him to do ,like bring a gun ,kidnap a kid and again does it blindly, no questions asked but plans to ask later?Again ,absolutely would not happen in Victorian era.He continually says ok fine she has got good looks but he will not be a fool like the others yet contradicts himself by blindly doing things for her with no sign he likes her.
2.She strips her clothes off and jumps into a river in front of him ,again 2013 as if any women in the regency era would intentionally do that in front of a male ,it was as if the author needed any excuse to finally get some action between them ,and again when she is visibly naked to the eye she seems extremely comfortable ,again, not usual to the era.
3.We are never told their age ,we are even told that a viscount tells her hurry up you will not be young for ever or be able to bare children ,even if this was to portray the viscount in an opportunistic light, how old was she?We are told she is no virgin and has enjoyed herself but she often gets offended when men may think she is easy prey for a mistress or possibly a whore ,again in that era how many men had she been with?It was not ,again, 2013 and I bought a regency romance ,so she was a whore, as regard the era?The hero asks her, I believe twice, ''how many?''Again she evades the answer by saying ''not many''? and becomes defensive by responding ,''how many have you been with or kissed?''.Really ?again, in a regency the men are the same as women? An eye for an eye?At least the Viscount was willing to step up to the plate but of course the poor guy had to be lacking in appearance of course!
4.The book is totally dominated by the relationship about the Hero and his father ,it might as well have been a book about them two,it is more of a man trying to prove he is a man to his dad and you also get a slight feeling that Jonathan had decided to take a leading role on all members of the family!?I do not remember Miles being weak in any way? Also all characters mentioned from the other books minus the dad are almost faceless ghosts in this one ,not a single word crosses their lips which makes the scenes almost lazy just placed there to exist.
5.Someone has to practically die even though they have shown no signs of feeling ill and just as fast recover for the hero to feel that he cannot live without the heroine, again just a lazy quick excuse to admit love ,and when he finally gets to be with the heroine ,the sex scene is all and everything in one ,as if telling the reader this is the only one your getting through this book. So what could two people possibly do during sex? Read it here as we need to end the book and you will not be getting anymore.
6.Her father ,we are told loved her mother, giving her his prized possession, and her mother told her nice things about him and to search him out if she ever needed him .When she meets up with him ,he shows not even a hint that he was attracted to her mom, he no less calls them both whores?Again why would we be told that her mother felt she was loved? Why the medal ?No connection! It again felt that the medal just existed so she could feel connected somewhere ,but it never followed through, in no possible way as regards the other people connected to it.So it may as well have not existed.
7.The whole situation with the child labour issue ,fine, but it absorbed too much of the romance and the people who mentioned the comments in favor of it were too extreme showing not a speck of compassion ,which again is fine but you would think that Violet or the Earl would have a comment .No we had spouting of ,''Yes too bad kids are dying ,we need to beat them'',yet none of the other adults were shocked to even comment .What happened to the Earl and the character we were lead to believe he was in 'I kissed an earl''?He just sat there listening accepting this as fact?
8.Jonathan has just an investment that has not paid off, runs out of money, penniless heroine gives him potential lover pearls(where is his pride?because at that point he does not know if she slept around for them?)to invest and she is the one that gives the idea of a business plan(so not him smart as we are told),he has been cut off by dad,and then goes from that end to coincidentally saving the life of the lawyer selling a mill his father and duke wanted (as if that would ever happen)(plus it is the mill that the heroine was abused in ,plus a whole bunch of other children in it)to owning it and making money from the investment and assuring the heroine they would own England one day?Come again? It seem so wave a wand and get all your wishes come true so we can end this book, nothing like the believable ending with Mile and Cynthia ,no these two were a product of very lazy writing.
9.And finally ,the epilogue which what is an epilogue?a bit of info further down the line of the story for these two ,but no again ,it is all again slow and repetitive of what has already been said the other characters feature more and the end is dominated again by the father and son.
10.What a disappointment ,I thought I was buying a Julie Anne Long sensual regency ,I have half a mind to return it but it would be unfair since I did read it,my only hope is Lyon story when it comes and I am hoping Olivia will not be 40 by then and had 20 lovers will be the same sensuality we had in the first few books ,I definitely do not recommend this as a regency romance as warped lazy 2013 relationship with a hero trying to prove to daddy his a man and a heroine having the hero do things for her ,probably lazy lazy all around! And if I can afford to spend my money on this lazy writing you would think the publishers would edit their printing errors before offering to the public!
