Disappointing Book
By Michael C. Reynolds
I just recently taught a class using this book. I did not choose it. I really wanted to like this book, but I have several major problems.

1) Errors. This book has way too many errors. I found at least a dozen, several of them critical.

2) Homework. The homework has too many difficult problems with very messy geometry. I would rather keep the geometry simpler and focus on learning the material, not figuring out some tricky angle.

3) Explaination. Several critical sections are not well layed out and lack clear explaination.

The reason why this book was chosen was that it uses graphical kinematic techniques for dynamic analysis - something that is getting rarer these days.

Great Machine Design Textbook
By Jill Burgoyne
This book is pretty easy to understand, but it's short on images. I had to read a lot of text to understand the concepts. It is very clear in its descriptions; however. It's fairly easy to navigate around this book. It's created for people who are studying Machine Design. It's a textbook, so nothing like a plot.

NOT MACHINE DESIGN: KINEMATICS INSTEAD
By Marc J. Driftmeyer
We need more of these textbooks. Kinematics is the geometric equivalent for Machine Design which any respectable ABET accredited University once required to know. CAD/CAM does not replace this even software companies want you to think it does.

Kinematics with direct applications to the most commonly used Machine Design areas is a must to know.

I won't rate this book as excellent because it is an overly simplified book on Kinematics. A more in-depth textbook on Kinematics is Mechanism Design, Analysis and Synthesis Vol I, by Erdman and Sandor.

Unfortunately, their Vol I and especially Vol II are extremely hard to find, not to mention any in-depth books on Kinematics. Also, the difference in depth between this book and Erdman's is vast and Erdman's was often overkill for the 3rd year ME student.

This is an excellent first exposure but by no means is it thee book on the subject.

Sold into slavery as a child to a cruel taskmaster, tiger-shifter Aiden Shrader trusts no one. Not even his own kind. Yet as a member of the Watchmen--the organization of shape-shifters who keep watch over the ancient nonhuman races--Aiden is fiercely protective of the helpless. Never more so than when he's asked to guard a little girl with witches' blood--and her beautiful human aunt. A woman who arouses all of Aiden's primal urges...urges he must resist.

To small-town schoolteacher Olivia Harcourt, the massive tigershifter with the glowing amber eyes is as much a dark mystery as the enemy stalking her. Yet Aiden is her only hope of surviving. Until their intense passion unleashes her own inner tigress with a ferocity that will make the evil Casus rue the day they messed with her family...and will take Aiden by seductive surprise.

Touch of Seduction
By K. Hill
PLOT: Tiger-shifter Aiden, along with friends Kellan and Nick, has been sent to protect 3-year old Jamie and her guardian Olivia and bring them back to their compound in Colorado.

PROS: Olivia and Aiden are likeable characters. Their attraction is obvious from the start. Touch of Seduction is well written with a decent plot that is fairly well paced.

CONS: Right up until the end, Aiden, Olivia, and their group are traveling to get to safety. Unless it's contemporary literature built around a road trip and character development, I'm going to go ahead and say, that no romance novel should ever spend the entire plot on the road. Especially if they're not alone. It's boring and makes the effort for characters to find "special" time seem more contrived.

There's a war going on in this series that seems to be getting more complicated rather than building to a conclusion. There are two more books (at the least) in this series. I don't know if the author has planned a conclusion to the war yet, but reading about it, it feels as though she's making it up "Lost"/"Heroes" Season 2 style as she goes along. There is something so vague here about the entire struggle that it just doesn't feel real.

Finally, the reader knows Aiden's motives for not wanting a serious relationship with Olivia, but his constant offers of a no strings affair should have been insulting and offensive to her. Even when she gives in, I rather wanted her to keep saying no.

3 STARS. Touch of Seduction is Book 4 in the Primal Instinct Series and it reads like book 4. There is a MUCH needed glossary of terms in the rear of the novel. A glossary! In a romance novel! I would highly recommend reading the other novels in the series first since I felt lost and overwhelmed at times with all the characters, creatures and history that I missed in the previous books.

Yet, I have a sneaking suspicion that I wouldn't like this novel one bit more if I'd read the previous novels. Usually when I read a really good book that's book 2 or 3 in a series, I have no questions about what happened before but I just want to buy every book in the group. Here I feel like I would have gotten to the end of book 3 and been angry that the war hadn't been wrapped up and stopped reading the series altogether. I have no true interest in the other books in the series if they in any way resemble this novel.

3.5 stars - I liked it but...
By melindeeloo
Bad boy shapeshifting Watchman Aiden is sent to protect a half witch/Merrick child and her Aunt Olivia. From the moment Aiden scents Olivia, Aiden is drawn to her, even though abuse in his childhood has left Aiden with a distrust of human females. But even though Aiden knows he 'should' pass his charges off to the other Watchmen and put distance between himself and the woman who threatens his control of his barely leashed beast - Aiden finds himself unable to let go of the woman he knows he will never be able to trust.

This was a mixed read for me. I really liked the intensity of romance between the shy insecure school teacher and the gorgeous almost feral shifter with his own painful sense of unworthiness. And I liked both that Byrd shifted focus from the Merricks to the Watchmen and that in this fourth book, we finally get both a good hero and a good heroine - one who is brave without being too stupid to live and one who has enough self-worth not to beg for the love she deserves.

What I didn't like, and this may be enough to keep me from continuing with the series, is that Byrd is just too heavy handed with the villains in this series. Although as readers we need to know that the Cassus are just too evil, I have a really hard time revisiting their depravity each and every book - their ultimate pleasure is feeding on flesh during rape - and there's not a word with enough yuck-ness to describe how distasteful I find this. Since the series is romance centric, the switch back and forth is even more disturbing to me - between wonderful romantic sex and murderous evil sex -eeww. And really, I think that this could have been toned down - skipping the first hand descriptions by the Cassus - and just getting the second hand accounts of the results I would still have 'gotten' just how truly awful these guys were. End rant, sorry.

Even though Byrd's erotica roots show from time to time and I am not crazy about lingering descriptions of body parts and fluids, she mostly avoids cruder language for those of us who prefer steamy to true erotica. So if I could have skipped the two chapters with the Cassus, I would have rated the book a notch higher. I loved the Watchmen, loved the romance and the leads, and I loved the presence of recurring characters from previous books.

Better to live one year as a tiger, than a hundred as a sheep. -Madonna

This is the fourth book in the Primal Instinct Series

This is our world filled with ancient clans of good, evil and everything in between. This is a time where loyalties, strengths and bloodlines are tested and retested. This is our world and our time, only the ancient and powerful bloodlines that have lain dormant for years are being reawakened to fight off evil creatures that have crossed into our world.

A brief synopsis of the series:

The Merrick are an ancient clan that live inside humans and that must feed off of blood before fully awakening and being able to conquer the Casus. The Buchanan family is the most powerful bloodline in the Merrick clan.

The Casus are immortal creatures that feed off of violent deaths and the flesh of their victims. They have been imprisoned until recently when they found a way to cross over into our world one monster at a time.

The Watchmen are a group of shape-shifters whose job it is to watch over the remaining supernatural clans. Up until this current war with the Casus, they remained a neutral party in the wars. Now they are aiding the Merrick in this fight.

This story:

Aiden Shrader is a shape-shifter and a member of the Watchmen. He is sent to help a school teacher, Olivia, and her niece, Jamie, reach the safety of the Watchmen compound. Olivia's stepsisters are witches descended from the Mallory line. The Mallory witches are the most powerful, and as such have become targets of the Casus. Jamie's mother has been devoured and killed by the Casus, while the other sister has been taken. Although Olivia is pure human, she knows of the supernatural world and fears for her niece's safety. Trusting the big Watchmen doesn't come easy, but she'll do anything to keep Jamie safe.

Having a painful past, Aiden has never liked or trusted humans. He can't understand why the little school teacher is getting under his skin so much.

I ordered this book and decided the storyline sounded a little too complex to begin at book 4. So I went back and ordered and read books 1-3 and I am glad I did, because I think I would have been totally lost in this complex world of supernatural happenings. Plus I would have missed out on 3 other spectacular reads and couples!

This book introduces some new groups of supernatural characters and creates some more unusual alliances. It also brings us up to date on the other couples from the previous stories, while paving the way for is sure to be an explosive next book starring two of my favorite characters.

At times the author tends to be a bit repetitive here and there, and she also tends to drag out the romantic couple conflict a little too far for my tastes, but she still delivers a powerfully entertaining read.

I really believe that with each tale the stories get tighter and the characters more delicious, I can hardly wait to see what happens next.

Her males are Alpha and yummy and her females are realistic everyday women with strengths and weaknesses, big hearts and open minds. The author created a world where the supernatural and human worlds blend seamlessly.

I would highly recommend this series to the paranormal romance fans, but I would not recommend starting this series anywhere but with book one. I really think this is a series that needs to be read in order. Enjoy!

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Includes Elizabeth Strout’s never-before-published essay about the origins of The Burgess Boys

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY
The Washington Post • NPR • Good Housekeeping

Elizabeth Strout “animates the ordinary with an astonishing force,” wrote The New Yorker on the publication of her Pulitzer Prize–winning Olive Kitteridge. The San Francisco Chronicle praised Strout’s “magnificent gift for humanizing characters.” Now the acclaimed author returns with a stunning novel as powerful and moving as any work in contemporary literature.

Haunted by the freak accident that killed their father when they were children, Jim and Bob Burgess escaped from their Maine hometown of Shirley Falls for New York City as soon as they possibly could. Jim, a sleek, successful corporate lawyer, has belittled his bighearted brother their whole lives, and Bob, a Legal Aid attorney who idolizes Jim, has always taken it in stride. But their long-standing dynamic is upended when their sister, Susan—the Burgess sibling who stayed behind—urgently calls them home. Her lonely teenage son, Zach, has gotten himself into a world of trouble, and Susan desperately needs their help. And so the Burgess brothers return to the landscape of their childhood, where the long-buried tensions that have shaped and shadowed their relationship begin to surface in unexpected ways that will change them forever.

With a rare combination of brilliant storytelling, exquisite prose, and remarkable insight into character, Elizabeth Strout has brought to life two deeply human protagonists whose struggles and triumphs will resonate with readers long after they turn the final page. Tender, tough-minded, loving, and deeply illuminating about the ties that bind us to family and home, The Burgess Boys is Elizabeth Strout’s newest and perhaps most astonishing work of literary art.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of the Month, March 2013: It can’t be easy to sit down and write a new novel after your last, Olive Kitteridge, won the Pulitzer Prize (in 2009). The pressure! The pressure! In The Burgess Boys, novelist Elizabeth Strout somehow manages to survive whatever next-book anxiety while at the same time revisiting the themes and types of characters that have made her famous: plainspoken Mainers (some transplanted now to Brooklyn) bound together by both love, competitiveness and the issues of the day. Here, hotshot lawyer Jim and bighearted Bob Burgess come together over a politically incorrect prank perpetrated by their sister’s son--and discover that their distrust of each other has never really gone away. But then, neither has their love. Nobody does buried conflict and tortured familial relations better than Strout. --Sara Nelson

From Booklist
Pulitzer Prize–winning Strout (Olive Kitteridge, 2008) delivers a tightly woven yet seemingly languorous portrayal of a family in longtime disarray. Brothers Jim and Bob Burgess, and sister Susan, are mired in a childhood trauma: when he was four, Bob unwittingly released the parking brake on the family car, which ran over their father and killed him. Originally from small Shirley Falls, Maine, the Burgess brothers have long since fled to vastly disparate lives as New York City attorneys. Egoistic Jim is a famous big shot with a corporate firm. Self-effacing Bob leads a more low-profile career with Legal Aid. High-strung Susan calls them home to fix a family crisis: her son stands accused of a possible hate crime against the small town’s improbable Somali population. The siblings’ varying responses to the crisis illuminate their sheer differences while also recalling their shared upbringing, forcing them finally to deal with their generally unmentioned, murky family history. Strout’s tremendous talent at creating a compelling interest in what seems on the surface to be the barest of actions gives her latest work an almost meditative state, in which the fabric of family, loyalty, and difficult choices is revealed in layer after artful layer. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: This is the first novel from Strout since her Pulitzer Prize–winning, runaway best-seller, Olive Kitteridge, and anticipation will be high. --Julie Trevelyan

“Strout’s greatest gift as a writer, outside a diamond-sharp precision that packs 320 fast-paced pages full of insight, is her ability to let the reader in on all the rancor of her characters without making any of them truly detestable. . . . Strout creates a portrait of an American community in turmoil that’s as ambitious as Philip Roth’s American Pastoral but more intimate in tone.”—Time

“No one should be surprised by the poignancy and emotional vigor of Elizabeth Strout’s new novel. But the broad social and political range of The Burgess Boys shows just how impressively this extraordinary writer continues to develop.”—The Washington Post

“What truly makes Strout exceptional—and her latest supple and penetrating novel so profoundly affecting—is the perfect balance she achieves between the tides of story and depths of feeling. . . . Every element in Strout’s graceful, many-faceted novel is keenly observed, lustrously imagined and trenchantly interpreted.”—Chicago Tribune

“Strout deftly exposes the tensions that fester among families. But she also takes a broader view, probing cultural divides. . . . Illustrating the power of roots, Strout assures us we can go home again—though we may not want to.”—O: The Oprah Magazine

“Reading an Elizabeth Strout novel is like peering into your neighbor’s windows. . . . There is a nuanced tension in the novel, evoked by beautiful and detailed writing. Strout’s manifestations of envy, pride, guilt, selflessness, bigotry and love are subtle and spot-on.”—Minneapolis Star Tribune

“Strout conveys what it feels like to be an outsider very well, whether she’s delving into the quiet inner lives of Somalis in Shirley Falls or showing how the Burgess kids got so alienated from one another. But the details are so keenly observed, you can connect with the characters despite their apparent isolation. . . . [A] gracefully written novel. [Grade:] A.”—Entertainment Weekly

“Wincingly funny, moving, wise.”—Good Housekeeping

“With her signature lack of sentimentality, a boatload of clear-eyed compassion and a penetrating prose style that makes the novel riveting, Strout tells the story of one Maine family, transformed. Again and again, she identifies precisely the most complex of filial emotions while illuminating our relationships to the larger families we all belong to: a region, a city, America and the world.”—More

“The Burgess Boys returns to coastal Maine [with] a grand unifying plot, all twists and damage and dark, morally complex revelations. . . . The grand scale suits Strout, who now adds impresario storytelling at book length to the Down East gift for plainspoken wisdom.”—Town & Country

Does Anyone Have Bob Burgess' Phone Number....
By Spindrift
I just finished Elizabeth Strout's new novel "The Burgess Boys" and feel more like my plane has just landed at LAX from Maine and I am disoriented as I make my way to claim my baggage because my head and my heart are still back in Shirley Falls with the Burgess family.

I want to contact someone in the family and check on everyone...that is how attached I became to "The Burgess Boys" and the rest of the clan as I read this wonderful book. It absolutely takes my breath away, how the phenomenal Strout can create a character like Olive Kitteridge (who owned my heart) and then produce her opposite on earth (Jim Burgess) so perfectly. There are alot of characters in "The Burgess Boys". In another author's hands, it could have been too many. But each of these compelling people are drawn so succinctly, with so much dimension and stunning depth, that they will literally stay with me forever. They are a family that has suffered together, not liked each other very much sometimes, but have a loving grasp on each other that will never be released. Not anyone here is completely likable...or completely not so. They all are attempting to do the best that they can. Aren't we all?

This is also the story of immigrants...and how painfully difficult their epic struggle is. How there are some elements so unique to the saga of immigrating to a new country, that it is not possible for the residents of the area receiving them to fully understand.

But most of all this is the story of an ordinary family. How childhood trauma touches all of us in different ways, how ugly and disparaging comments made to a loved one carelessly can impact their whole life. It just screams at the reader...love the ones you love well, and never wander too far away from home...because your heart never really leaves anyway.

Don't miss "The Burgess Boys". I have a feeling that it will become just as important of a book as it's predecessor, "Olive Kitteridge".

Some novels are a joy to read....
By Lazy Day Gardener
In some ways I dreaded opening Elizabeth Strout's 'The Burgess Boys.' I'd admired the Pulitzer Prize winning 'Olive Kitteridge' and feared that Strout's next novel could never live up to my expectations. In retrospect I see that I should spend more time worrying about world peace and my vanishing waist line and let Strout take care of herself.

Some authors are like trapeze artists - they make the impossible look easy. Strout is such an author. My fears for her newest novel failed to take into consideration her beautiful prose. She is a gifted storyteller. And add that her insight into the human heart, and we have the makings of a great novel.

Simply put, 'The Burgess Boys' is the story of three siblings, two brothers and a sister, who live with the guilt of their young father's death. Leaving the three in the running car, he had stepped out for a moment; one of the children sat behind the wheel, and the car rolled forward, killing their father.

'The Burgess Boys' is, as the title suggests, a novel of family relationships. And the effect of guilt and redemption. Who is truly responsible for the accident? Can the two alienated Burgess brothers pull together to help their sister when her own son is accused of a hate crime? What makes us the people that we are? How do we earn redemption?

It is a novel of character rather than plot, of introspection rather than action.

But it's also a novel whose beautiful prose is to be savoured and enjoyed.

Fascinating timely novel
By lisatheratgirl
I ripped through this book in two days. It's just excellent. The small backwoods town of Shirley Falls, Maine, from which the Burgess family hails, is dying on the vine like many towns in New England since the mills up and left. Then there is an influx of newcomers, people from war-torn Somalia, via refugee camps in Kenya. They are Muslims, wear traditional dress, and many don't speak English. Of course there is jarring culture shock for both the old residents and the newcomers, and the communication problem makes it virtually impossible to understand the values and beliefs of the opposite group. There is naturally some hostility and resentment on both sides.

The Burgess boys, Jim and Bob, are both lawyers in New York. Their sister Susan, a divorcee with a teenage son, still lives in Shirley Falls. Her son does something stupid that blows up into a national and then an international incident. He knows nothing about Islam or about what the Somalis in the town went through in their earlier lives. Within days, everyone (politicians, police, liberals, conservatives, clergy, even a white supremacist group from Montana) converges on the town for a huge rally. Susan calls in her brothers for help.

The story is terrific, but so are the characters. Jim is Perry Mason, Johnnie Cochran, F. Lee Bailey, etc. rolled into one. He almost was picked for OJ Simpson's Dream Team, but he did get an acquittal in another high profile case involving a celebrity singer. Jim is such a jerk I wouldn't have lunch with him, but I would want him on my side in litigation. Bob is a troubled Legal Aid attorney who no longer does courtroom work. Jim is condescening to everyone, but he really puts his brother down all the time, calling him moron, retard, slobdog, idiot, mental case. He's not much better to his wife, Helen, or Bob's ex-wife, Pamela, both of whom are smart, sensitive, good people. Bob is the most sensitive of the Burgess kids, and I get the impression Jim and Susan perceive this as weakness. The author also explores the situation from the view of an older man who left Mogadishu later than he should have, and now lives in Shirley Falls with cousins. It's important since the reader needs to know why the Somalian population is seeing things as they do. Probably many of the original residents of the town are associating all Muslims with 9/11 and other terrorist acts. It's a really difficult situation and I think the author handles it as well as anyone could.

This could be one of the best books of the year.

About the Author
Martin Luther (1483-1546) was born in Germany and is famous for his protest, The Ninety-five Theses, which he nailed to the door of the castle church of Wittenberg. The son of middle-class parents, Luther left his comfortable life to become a monk. Luther's own spiritual awakening was sparked by his study of the Greek text of Paul's letter to the Romans, which challenged him with the statement, "The just shall live by faith."

Jonah Gray Wolf comes to a small Alaskan town as a toddler, carried by wolves; as he grows, he displays a remarkable ability to communicate with animals and to heal. When he heals millionaire Major Bourdain from a fatal wound, Bourdain becomes determined to bring Gray Wolf under his power so that he might live forever. He sends bounty hunters after the enigmatic healer, forcing Gray Wolf to stay on the move, ever a step ahead of his pursuers. The chase leads Gray Wolf to Little Top, W.Va., where he meets Lucia Andahar, a loner like him who is being tormented by a sadistic stalker. They fall in love and come to one another's aid almost immediately. When a spectacular rescue makes him media fodder, Gray Wolf is forced to make a stand to protect himself and the woman he loves. Veteran author Sala (Nine Lives, etc.) crafts two exciting leads bound by their love of animals and reluctance to trust people. (Apr.)

Snow Valley, Southern Alaska: 1977

The rangy gray she-wolf, still thin from the passing winter, paused at the edge of the tree line above the valley. As she lifted her nose and sniffed the air, the hair on the back of her neck rose. She could smell the danger. Every instinct she had told her to turn and run, but the pup beside her had needs she couldn't provide.

At that moment the pup whined. When she turned and licked its dusty face, it wiggled with pleasure. As much as she would like to lie down, time was not on her side. She nudged the pup gently until it latched on to her pelt. With a single whine of reassurance, she started forward, confident that it would follow as she started down the gentle slope into the valley below.

* * *

The spring sunshine in Snow Valley was a welcome respite from the bitter Alaskan winter and the months without sunlight. It took a special kind of people to be at peace with a world that had months without sunlight, then months without darkness, but the native Inuits were just such a people. It took more than funky geography and quixotic weather patterns to stagger them. They'd been here for centuries and were at peace with their world.

Today, a brisk wind was coming down from the slopes, whipping among the simple wood-frame buildings housing the hunting camp and the small contingent of people who lived there, popping and yanking at the fresh laundry the women had hanging on their clotheslines.

A bush pilot named Harve Dubois, originally from Biloxi, Mississippi, had a small house on the south edge of the tiny settlement, next to the landing strip, which was the only way in and out of the camp. He'd been in residence for almost twelve years now and considered himself a replanted Alaskan. During the different hunting seasons, he flew hunters in and out of the area with his Bell Jet copter. In the off-seasons, he had a propensity for hibernation, at which times he retreated to his cabin with a case of Jim Beam and a grocery sack full of paperback thrillers.

Doctor Adam Lawson lived on the other edge of the hunting camp. He'd been brought in more than six years ago on a mercy mission when an unfortunate hunter had met up with a pissed-off grizzly. The hunter's gun had jammed, and then the grizzly had jammed him up one side and down the other. By the time the doctor had patched the hunter up enough to be flown out, he'd fallen for the people and the place. He'd come back the next spring on his own and had been there ever since.

A man named Silas Parker was the owner of the camp and lived and worked in a small, two-story A-frame. The lower floor was devoted to a sort of grocery and dry goods store, in which he stocked a wide variety of ammunition and a lesser amount of canned and dry goods. The second floor, which amounted to two very small rooms, was where he lived and slept.

The rest of the residents of Snow Valley were mostly Inuit and had been here longer than God. At least, that was what Harve claimed. Adam Lawson figured it was just the opposite. God had put them here. They'd just had the good sense to stay. The Inuit men were good hunting guides, and a large number of them were often away from the camp with hunting parties for long periods of time, which periodically left the women and children alone.

The recent good weather had spawned a flurry of expeditions, which meant the women were taking advantage of extra time alone to do a little spring cleaning. With the below-zero temperatures behind them, the good weather also allowed their children to play out in the fresh air and sunshine.

Some of the older children were involved in a game of softball. Others were playing tag or hide and seek. A pair of six-year-old twins who went by the names of Shorty and Bubba were sitting in the middle of the road that snaked through the village, drawing pictures in the dirt with sticks.

As they sat, a strong burst of wind lifted the dirt in which they were playing, blowing bits of grass and sand into their eyes. Shorty, the older twin, frowned and closed his eyes, while Bubba, the taller one, quickly turned away, shielding his face from the debris. As he turned, he happened to look up the road. Seconds later, he jumped to his feet, squinting his eyes against the sun, unable to believe what he was seeing. Then suddenly reality surfaced. He grabbed his twin by the hair, and started pulling on him and screaming, "Run, Shorty, run!"

Shorty reacted without question. Together, he and Bubba ran full tilt for their house, which was less than fifty yards away, screaming as they went. Their screams brought not only their mother, Willa, running, but others, as well.

"Mama, Mama…wolf!" Bubba screamed as he pointed up the road.

Willa needed only one look to begin echoing his cries.

"Wolf! Wolf!" she screamed, and began shoving her boys toward the house as the other women began a frantic search for their own children, desperate to get them inside.

* * *

The she-wolf stopped. She heard the screams. She smelled their fear. It was all the warning she was going to get. She wanted—needed—to run in the opposite direction. But the pup's tug on her hair matched the tug of instinct that kept her from abandoning it to an uncertain fate. It was that fierce, motherly instinct that gave her the courage to continue on, moving slowly with her head lowered to accommodate the little brown pup now clinging to her ear.

Silas Parker heard the commotion. Curious, he put down the cans he was shelving and moved toward the front door. It didn't take him long to see what was happening. A big gray wolf was coming into the village. Her walk was slow, and sometimes she staggered, with her head low to the ground. There was only one reason he could think of as to why a wild animal like that would come into the camp.

Rabies.

Silas had once seen a man die from the disease and didn't want to ever witness such suffering again.

He ran behind the counter, lifted his rifle from the rack on the wall, grabbed a handful of shells from a box beneath the counter and began loading the rifle on the run.

"Get inside! Get inside!" he shouted, as he started down the road. He wasn't much of a shot, which meant he was going to have to get closer to ensure a hit, and he didn't want to have to be dodging kids and women to take aim.

Another woman came out of her house with her rifle as Silas ran past. He could hear the unsteady sound of her breathing as she struggled to catch up.

He was still shaking from the burst of adrenaline as he neared Harve's landing strip. The wolf was close, almost too close. Afraid to go any farther, he stopped, lifted the rifle to his shoulder and took aim. Counting slowly backward from five to steady his breathing, he tightened his finger on the trigger and had started to squeeze when the woman who'd been coming up behind him suddenly screamed in his ear, then shoved the rifle up into the air.

"Don't shoot!"

He flinched. Marie Tlingtik's shout was not only startling, but confusing. He turned abruptly.

"What the hell, Marie?"

"Look," she said, pointing at the wolf.

Silas turned in the direction she was indicating.

"Yes, damn it. It's a wolf and—"

The words froze in the back of his throat. He took a deep breath and then wiped his eyes, certain he was hallucinating.

"That is not possible," Silas muttered, then turned toward Marie. "Holy Mother of God, is that a baby? Is it? Do you see it, Marie? Is that a real baby beside that wolf, or am I crazy?"

Marie muttered something in her native language, then turned around and ran.

Silas wanted to follow her, but the sight of that thin sun-browned toddler held him fast.

The wolf yipped. Once.

The gun Silas was holding slipped from his hands and landed at his feet with a thud. He stood, still staring in disbelief as the she-wolf also stopped. Separated by less than twenty yards, Silas watched as the wolf lifted her head. Even from this distance, he felt her gaze fixed on him.

"Jesus, Jesus, Jesus," he whispered as his legs went weak. He wanted to run, but he couldn't bring himself to move. Still, he had to do something. That little kid could barely walk and was frighteningly thin. He couldn't just turn away from this. Even if he didn't understand it, he couldn't let it go.

Without thinking of the danger to himself, he took a deep breath, and started waving and shouting at the wolf.

The she-wolf flinched at the sharp, frightening sounds. She felt the danger as vividly as she felt the wind on her face. It was time to go. She turned to the pup and nudged it forward. It toddled a few steps ahead of her, then stumbled and dropped into the dirt.

Every instinct she had told her to run. Now. But she was torn. The pup whined as it fell. When it began struggling to get up, her instinct was to go toward it, but then she looked up. The human was moving closer. Without looking at the pup again, she turned and began loping back toward the trees.

Left on its own, the pup began to cry in earnest.

She could hear it as she ran. But it was only after she reached relative safety at the tree line that she stopped and looked back. The place looked deserted. That was when she lifted her head and howled. The long, mournful sound spilled down into Snow Valley, then echoed off the surrounding hills.

But it was what happened next that sent the entire village of Snow Valley into shock.

Silas had the child in his arms and was heading for Doc Lawson's house as fast as he could go. He looked behind him more than once as he ran, making sure the wolf hadn't done a U-turn and nipped back on his heels. As he ran, he kept glancing down at the baby, feeling the little boy's long black hair blowing across his face and the heat emanating from his thin brown body. Silas thought the child looked Indian, but it was hard to tell how much was dirt and how much was true skin color.

Suddenly the long, mournful howl of a wolf rode the wind blowing down into the valley. The howl was disconcerting. Silas flinched as he looked over his shoulder one last time, just to assure himself that the wolf was gone.

At the sound of the wolf's howl, the baby grabbed Silas by his full, bushy beard, then twisted in his arms so that he was now looking toward the mountain. The little boy's tear-filled eyes were wide with shock. But instead of crying, he opened his little mouth and wailed. The high-pitched sound was an almost perfect echo of the wolf's howl.

Startled, Silas gasped and came close to dropping the child. If the boy had not been holding on to Silas's beard with both hands, he would have gone tumbling down to the ground. But Silas quickly recovered and began patting the baby on the back, trying to give him comfort as he kept on going.

"Now, now," Silas muttered. "Don't cry, little fella, don't cry."

The sound of Silas's voice was as startling to the baby as the wolf's howl had been to Silas. For a few silent moments, their gazes locked.

It was then that Silas realized the baby's eyes were not brown, but amber, marked with flecks of a yellowish gold, more like the eyes of the wolf instead of the dark-eyed Inuits.

"Damn, kid…where did you come from?" But the wolf couldn't talk and the child didn't know.

HEALER is a wonderful mixture of mystery, romance, suspense, and the paranormal. I loved it. It is not only very readable it has a wonderful satisfying story. From the first page to the last, it is very captivating and heartwarming.

Jonah Gray-Wolf, aged 2, is saved by a wolf and brought into a small camp in Alaska, where he is adopted by Dr.Adam Lawson. Jonah has a gift, he is able to heal man and animal by laying his hands on them. One day he heals a millionaire who is hunting in Alaska. This changes his life when the millionaire is determined to capture him and keep him with him so he can live forever. For ten years Jonah has eluded him with the help of his animal allies.

Lucia Maria Andahar has lost everything too. Her whole family was killed in a wreck when she was 14, she was sent to live with an aunt and uncle. Two years later at 16 she ran away and has been alone since. Her uncle's unwanted attentions forced her to flee the only place she had. Now she lives in Little Top, West Virginia, where she works as a waitress.

Two lonely people who have no home, find a home in each other. Lucia has a stalker, someone who is leaving notes for her to find. Horrible notes that say what he intends to do to her. Lonely and scared, but determined to keep what little independence she has, Lucia basks in the warmth and love she feels each time she touches Jonah. But the millionaire has not forgotten Jonah and when circumstances reveal his whereabouts, danger is not far behind.

I loved the warmth and tenderness in this book and I felt tears at the ending. I also wish it hadn't ended, good books seem to end to quickly. Do not miss this one. Good Reading.

4.5 stars - for Healer's hero Jonah
By melindeeloo
Healer is a lovely little romance between the lonely Luce, who was the sole survivor in a crash that killed the rest of her family, and Jonah, who has the ability to communicate with animals and whose power to heal has cost him his family and home and forced Jonah to spend the last ten years running from the greedy wealthy man determined to have control of Jonah's powers. When Jonah meets Luce, coming to her aid and saving Luce's trapped and dying dog, he is immediately captivated by Luce and senses a kindred spirit with Luce because of their loneliness and as fellow prey, because Luce too is hunted. Luce is amazed and a bit spooked by Jonah's unbelievable powers, but though she is drawn to Jonah with a power physical connection it is ultimately Jonah's consideration and gentle kindness that wins Luce.

Jonah is truly a wonderful hero, not the alpha macho guy that his legendary wolfish beginnings might suggest. Instead he is loving and thoughtful and truly cares for others, as you can see in his interactions with both Luce and the isolated elderly woman that gives him a job. Also Jonah's need to save lives, even when it draws the attention that threatens his ability to have a quiet life, shows his selflessness. Yet even with his gentler qualities, Jonah is powerful, and his power can also be awesome and frightening. And to keep Luce in his life and to ensure her safety, Jonah will finally stop running and face down the evil men that pursue them.

Even with Luce's stalker and Jonah's hunters, Healer is a romance first and suspense second. And the wonderful character that Sala has created in Jonah is really makes Healer a satisfying paranormal romance.

Excellent Read - Couldn't put it down
By Mary Boardman
Sharon Sala creates pictures with her words that are unforgettable. She had me from the first page to the last - hook, line and sinker! This lady is an awesome author. I'd buy any of her books, and actually have quite a number of them but this one is extraordinary! Not only does it show the true evil of humanity but also the true good. It's a heartwarming story of Jonah Gray Wolf who possesses a gift he uses only for good. But when he helps one man who in turn tries to capture Jonah to reap the benefits of Jonah's gift, Jonah moves from town to town to keep from being captured. But he discovers love in West Virginia and must risk everything. Keep a box of Kleenex close at hand, you'll need them. Awesome, inspiring and brilliant. Sharon Sala at her best!

It explains the tools and techniques needed to manage investment risk, detect mispriced securities, minimize taxes, and measure the performance of investment managers. In addition, the text presents exhaustive discussions of capital asset pricing, arbitrage pricing, interest rates, pricing of derivative securities, bond management, stock valuation, estimating future earnings and dividends, and fixed income markets. While the mathematical content is kept mini-mal, the basic statistical concepts required for an understanding of the text are introduced in a background chapter to help students review this material quickly and easily.

A FAMOUS UNIVERSALIST MINISTER DETAILS THEIR HISTORY (UP TO 1830)
By Steven H Propp
Thomas Whittemore (1800-1861) was an influential Universalist pastor; he also wrote The plain guide to Universalism: designed to lead inquirers to the belief of that doctrine, and believers to the practice of it. He explained in the Preface to this 1830 book, "This work is a continuation of the History of Universalism from the date at which it was closed by the author of the Ancient History. I have attempted a connected account of this doctrine in reference only to England and the United States..."

He notes, "For although... Universalism was condemned in the [Lutheran Augsburg] Confession, the Reformers were not distinguished by the assertion of endless misery from the Catholics, as they were by maintaining the supreme authority of the word of God, and the right of private judgment. For ten centuries the Catholic Church had asserted the eternal ruin of all those who died out of its communion; hence, the doctrine of endless torment is not a doctrine of the Reformation.." (Pg. 23)

Discussing the views of an earlier Universalist, he says, "The evils that befall us here have a tendency to promote our good. Analogy teaches that the evils of another life will have a like good effect. The creation of benevolence in man is an argument in favor of the hypothesis. For it is not reasonable that God should give us this principle, and leave it forever unsatisfied. The infinite goodness of God is MANIFESTLY an argument in favor of Universal Salvation. So are his infinite happiness and perfection." (Pg. 219)

He says, "These are the traces of Universalism as it existed in the United States previously to, and at the time of Mr. [John] Murray's arrival. But this doctrine can be said to have been then scarcely known; and as his labors were the principal cause of exciting public attention to the subject, and of establishing societies of that faith in different parts of the country... he is justly considered the Father of Universalism in America." (Pg. 318)

This history obviously needs to be supplemented by later works (notably The Larger Hope: The First Century of the Universalist Church in America, 1770-1870); still, it is a fascinating document for anyone studying the history of this religious movement.
