The Bad Boy Billionaire's Wicked Arrangement (Wallflower Trilogy Book 1), by Maya Rodale

The first installment of a sexy series about a modern-day heroine writing historical novels based on her romantic misadventures with the Bad Boy Billionaire.

Jane Sparks has accidentally announced her engagement on Facebook—to the infamous Bad Boy Billionaire, Duke Austen. As soon as it's discovered that Jane and Duke barely know each other (one hot kiss at a party does not a relationship make), she'll be completely humiliated. And then Duke does something Jane never expected: He plays along with her charade.

With his hard-partying playboy reputation jeopardizing a 150-million-dollar investment deal, Duke realizes an engagement with the sexy but oh-so-proper librarian could be just the thing to repair his reputation. This good girl tempts him to be very wicked … but only with her. It's unprecedented. Inconceivable. Totally alluring.

As the unlikely match of librarian and tech entrepreneur set out to convince the world—and the internet—that their love is real, something unexpected happens: They start falling for each other. But Jane is secretly writing a historical romance novel that could expose their carefully constructed romance … unless two perfect strangers are content to be perfectly scandalous together.

    Cliffhanger
    By Germaine
A really cute contemporary with a techie billionaire H and a librarian h. I was really caught up in the story and then ------ a cliffhanger. Aaaaargh!! The novella ends at 80% and the rest of the book is an excerpt for the next part of the cliffhanger story and an excerpt from the regency novel which the h is writing in the book. I read a bit of the regency novel, and it doesn't look that good. (This is a real book that is also by Maya Rodale and published by Avon.)

What? I Have to Wait Until February???
    By Retired Nurse
I was tempted to share some of the dialogue of this charming little book with my husband; but wait! He doesn't know I read this
type of "literature"!! I didn't find a character in this story that wasn't totally appealing and likeable, and the storyline was a fresh
approach to a modern romance/comedy. I was HORRIFIED when I got to 80% complete and realized that the story couldn't
possibly be resolved in the next 90 minutes; now I have to wait. Sadly. Alone. No one to share the sense of loss with.

    I was enjoying it, until...
    By Christina C.
It ended with a cliff hanger! I had no idea that this was an installment, which may or may be my own fault, but I NEVER read books like this. How it could just build up like that then end so abruptly felt like a rip-off. I'm so mad that I wasted my time with these characters, and when I go back to look and see if it said on the cover that it was only a part of a book, I really hope it was my fault or I'll be back to lower this to 1 star. If it were a whole book I probably would have given at least 4 stars.

Well, I went back and checked and there is nothing on the cover to warn me that it was just a beginning. While the story telling was fine, and I was into the characters, I don't feel I can give any more stars. I feel like I wasted my precious reading time. I'm a mother, grandmother, I have a job and I'm a full time student, as well. I don't have much time for leisure reading, and I feel like I was robbed of what time I do have. When a book is an installment it should say so on the cover.

"I would rather be home dyeing my hair."

Blu Masterson peeked between the heavy red curtains that stretched two stories high. She searched for her groom, but no particular man stood out amongst the huge crowd on the first-floor atrium of the Landmark Center. The room was ninety-percent male. The few females were vampires.

She saw that the room's inhabitants had divided, as if magnetic filings to opposite poles—vampires to the right, werewolves to the left.

The dais toward the back of the ballroom had been decorated with a ridiculous white pergola tucked with red roses, and a string quartet played an adagio entirely too upbeat for her heavy heart at this, her wedding.

"But your hair is such a pretty color tonight." Blu's best friend, Sabrina Kriss, smooshed her friend's thick bob with both hands and delivered her a glitter-frosted wink. "You're just nervous."

"Nervous? Is that what you call it? I'm marrying a freaking vampire, Bree. A vampire I've never met. A vampire I've been told is nine hundred years old. And in case you still missed the point—he's a vampire."

Bree rolled her violet eyes. She was sidhe, so did not relate to Blu's ingrained disgust for vampires.

Faeries got along with pretty much all the various paranormal nations. Werewolves did not.

As far as Blu was concerned, vampires were vile, blood-hungry creatures. They flaunted aristocratic snobbery that manifested as entitlement, and were possessed of an inhumane fixation on mortal man. They needed mortals for survival, while the species wasn't worth her time.

Bree asked gaily, "What do you think Ryan—"

"Don't say his name. Please, Bree. It'll only make the night more difficult to get through."

Blu bowed her head and wandered to the window. Tugging aside the curtain, she looked over the dark street outside.

She'd agreed to this idiotic farce of an arranged marriage to appease her father and pack leader, Amandus Masterson. "To show the werewolf nation we are capable of putting aside our differences and embracing the vampire nation," Amandus had proclaimed, but not without a wink.

Yeah, but he wasn't the one being forced to marry a vampire.

    And it was force.

When presented with the marriage proposal, Blu had staunchly refused. For weeks. She was a princess; no one told her what to do. That argument held little weight within her father's pack. Blu hated all the Northern pack members. The only one she could tolerate was Ridge, her father's right-hand man.

    And Ryan.

    Don't think of him.

After the engagement had been inflicted, Blu had pleaded and pouted and even went on a hunger strike for two days, but she did love to eat, and self-denial was not her strong suit.

How she wished her mother was still around. Someone to stand on her side. Someone Blu could tuck her head against and sniffle out a few tears to. At the very least, someone who would nod encouragingly as Blu walked down the aisle tonight.

The door opened and a man poked his head inside the room. Blu stiffened and clasped her fingers together.

"There you are." Amandus Masterson crossed the room to her. The standard proud-father smile was absent from his long, drawn face. Blu would have been surprised had he shown her any sign of pride. He inspected her hair. "What is that ghastly color?"

She looked down, eyeing Bree surreptitiously. The faery had retreated to the wall, arms across her chest and eyes seeking anything but Amandus.

"I should have expected nothing better," he said grumpily. "Why must you always challenge me, daughter?"

"Challenge? I haven't said a word since you stepped in."

Blu had tried every trick in the book to convince Amandus she wasn't marriage material, until her father had threatened to have Ryan removed from her life. She should have protested more. But she never could find her strength in Amandus's presence.

And she knew what removed meant. Blu didn't want her lover harmed because she was too stubborn to play along with Daddy's game.

No doubt about it, this fiasco was a game.

She had her orders. And now the dread night had arrived.

"Here." He dropped a heavy ring onto her palm. "The jeweler delivered it moments ago. Don't lose it. And don't give me your disdain. Tonight you will not act as your mother so frequently did. You will do as you've been told."

Startled, Blu shook her head minutely. So rarely did he mention her mother. She wanted to grab him by the shoulders, shake him and ask him for more information. Her mother never did as she was told? Had she irritated Amandus, as well? Why had she left?

Persia Masterson had disappeared when Blu was eleven. No trace left behind, no trail to follow, completely vanished. And with the father/daughter relationship as impersonal as it was, Blu would never have the chance to learn the answers to her aching questions.

"The wedding march begins in five minutes," Amandus stated. "You've your instructions, Blu. Don't let me down."

    "Yes, Father."

Jiggling the ring in her cupped palm, she waited until Amandus exited and closed the door before she exhaled and caught her shoulders against the wall behind her. Her heart raced and she winced to realize how quickly her anxiety had shot through the roof.

"Remember," Bree offered as she approached. "It may seem the most awful thing to marry a vampire, but with your vows tonight, you will be leaving your father's house."

"Thanks, Bree. I knew you'd be the one to point out the good in this disaster. Tuck this somewhere for me, will you?"

The faery took the ring and sought Blu's bouquet among the tissue paper crumpled in the florist's box.

Clasping a palm about her neck, Blu couldn't decide which was worse—marriage to a vampire or remaining at the pack compound. Neither offered the freedom she desired.

So she would seek a third option, when the time was right.

With a brush of her fingers, she confirmed the three-inch-wide choker was still in place at her neck. Though the gemstones resembled diamonds, they were cheap cubic zirconia. Blu had bought it as a treat for succumbing to her father's demands—and for protection. She didn't want any vampires getting ideas at the sight of her neck. It was a futile defense, but it did provide reassurance.

Tonight she needed all the support she could muster.

She wasn't afraid of vampires. Not that she'd been around many, or had held a conversation with one.

And she wasn't afraid of a creature because he or she was different. She'd accepted Bree; the faery was her best friend. Years ago she'd had a few witch friends. And her father had once dated a chaos demon; she'd liked her.

Moving in and playing wifey to a vampire? Bring it on. Just because she would sign the marriage contract did not mean she had to like him or go to bed with him.

She would go through the motions. Until her father determined those motions proved successful. But would compliance then see her back at the compound? That was not her ultimate goal.

    "It's time," Bree said.

The faery hugged her from behind, snuggling her cheek on Blu's bare shoulder. Her violet-and-blue wings tickled along Blu's arm, warm with tenderness.

"You look gorgeous, honey. There's not a wolf in the house who won't shed tears over losing you."

    "You think?"

Female werewolves were rare. Which was why this whole arranged-marriage thing was expected to mean so much and be the catalyst to bringing the two nations together. If the wolves could sacrifice one of their females to marry a vampire, then they could surely stand back and allow peace to reign.

Peace was a long time coming, she had to admit. For decades, probably centuries, the two nations had been at odds. The vampires were the cruelest; they'd hunted and slaughtered her breed without mercy.

And what were the vampires sacrificing? Nothing, as far as Blu was concerned.

Sure, this man she was to marry was some revered vampire lord who belonged to Nava, one of the oldest tribes around. He was called an elder, and there were supposedly but a handful of his ilk walking the earth. That meant little. Only that he was old. Old, old, old.

    "Chin up," Bree whispered.

"It is." Blu lifted her chin and turned to her friend. "How do I look? I may attract all the male wolves but do you think I can bring a longtooth to his knees?"

"You're going to have to quit using that word. I don't think it'll go over so well with the new hubby."

"Whatever. Longtooth, bloodsucker, flesh-pricker." It felt good to rattle off the epithets one last time. "So do I pass muster?"

Bree shimmied her gaze over the tight black sheath Blu wore.

Her bridal shroud, Blu had named it. She'd had it specially designed. It plunged low in the front, clinging and only covering half her high, full breasts. The black silk was slit high on both thighs, clasped at her hips with tiny rhinestone chains. The back…well, there was no back. It plunged to her derriere, and revealed the intricate tattoo her lover—former lover, she amended—had etched into her flesh along her spine.

Ryan had claimed her as his own after her father had grudgingly agreed to consider their engagement. As the pack's scion, Ryan was the next in line as principal should Blu's father die. But Amandus thought himself immortal. No whelp was going to wrench away his command.

That had been a year ago. Amandus had reneged on their engagement when presented with a grander, more delicious proposal.

Her lover had been shattered, but that hadn't kept them apart. They had been together 24/7 until two days ago when Amandus had sent Ridge to retrieve Blu from Ryan's home.

"Do you think Ryan will ever have me again?" she asked Bree.

    "Of course he will."

"But I'll be tainted. I'll smell like nasty longtooth."

"I thought you weren't going to let the vampire touch you?"

Blu lowered her lashes and looked aside. Her reflection in the night-dark...

Don't let the Cheesy Title Put You Off
    By melindeeloo
Connected to her Nocturne Wicked Games series, in Her Vampire Husband, Michele Hauf gives us yet another immortal pairing finding love in the arms of the enemy - a vamp and a werewolf here instead of the earlier vamp/witch couples. And with just a bit more space than the rest of her Wicked Game Nocturne books to tell her story and Hauf puts the extra pages to good use, doing a more in depth job of developing her leads and also spending the time to allow for the vampire husband, Creed, and his reluctant werewolf bride, Blu, to get past their racial prejudices. Time for 'dog' and 'long tooth' to grow to like and then love each other, as Creed discovers the vulnerable young woman behind the wild wigs and uncouth manners and Blu finds the tender, passionate, considerate man at the heart of the stuffy ancient vamp.

I didn't realize that this was authored by Hauf when I bought My Vampire Husband. Which is just as well since I'd been of the opinion that her work was hit or miss. But after this story and a few others that I have liked recently(Deadly Kiss and Devil To Pay) I have to change that to more hit than miss (I am now 7 out of 9 on the positive side - though I have to say that Hauf's shapeshifter mythos is not my favorite.)

With the story set firmly in the Wicked Games world, there are all sorts of fun cameos from past characters, but I think that this one would work well enough as a stand alone read since Hauf manages to bring in pretty much everything of importance from the past books - though I think that new readers will be intrigued by the subtle references to past events in the series - fortunately all the earlier books are still available at least in e-format.

Lovin' Me Some Vampires Vs. Werewolves!
    By VampFanGirl
A centuries long controversy between vampires and werewolves has led to a rather strange peace offering in the form of a marriage. With each species sacrificing one of their own for the union, the dueling parties wait with baited breath for love to blossom and the blood wars to end.

Blu Masterson, the werewolf princess offered for the peace-bringing marriage, has understandably developed a sad distrust of the males not only amongst her own species but of the world as well. Proving time and again that they are vicious takers with their own interests being held above all others, Blu has learned that taking shelter with the least painful of the opposite sex is better than the brutality that she's repeatedly suffered in the hands of the pack as a whole. Worse, her sufferings have been at the command of her father - a man she has little to no respect for but still holds a pack allegiance to. Now she's been forced to marry a vampire lord, a man she has no inking of and one that could potentially cause more pain than she's ever before endured.

Nine centuries is plenty of time for vampire lord, Creed Saint-Pierre, to develop some pretty unhealthy and solidified judgements where werewolves are concerned. They're blood hungry mongrels whom of which Creed had no problems executing on site up until a few decades ago. Now he only kills when in mortal danger but his flagrant hatred for the beasts still exists. Standing up for this farce of marriage, Creed has no intentions of making peace. He'll pretend, of course, but Creed and his vampires have ulterior motives that will soon make the wolves bow down to the vampires forever. But there's one little problem: Creed's new beguiling, sinfully sexy wife rendering most - if not all - of his thoughts south towards the giant ache in his pants. And the discomfort makes focusing on plans of domination difficult.

Mystery swirls intriguingly around Blu for more than half the novel. Parading around in various bright colored wigs, both reader and hero itch to pull them off to reveal the natural hair beneath as though the unveiling is also the key to solving Blu but really it only proves to be the tip of the ice berg. She's a wounded creature but the knowledge that she's never known any different with regards to what a real honorable man is makes her extremely innocent when it comes to her overall reaction to Creed. She dances about him with twists of her flirtatious outfits and turns of her scathing words keeping both Creed and the reader at a healthy distance. But with each successful test Blu lays upon her new vampire husband, his patience soon wins her guarded trust. Never once does he attempt to overpower her, hurt or abuse her. His tenderness is at first confusing and almost fearful but as Blu comes to trust him, her lust ramps sky high as well as her overall need for his love and the fact that she yearns for a vampire matters little. What's important is that she's finally found both freedom and safety, something she's craved her entire life and now that she has it she's determined not to let go.

Early on, Creed doesn't exactly know how to handle his intriguing new wife. Firstly, he's never seen a female werewolf in all his nine hundred years. They're incredibly rare and therefore always hidden protectively within the pack. But his centuries of existence didn't render him daft where women are concerned, quite the contrary. However, it's not just skill with the opposite sex that leads Creed to taming his wildly delicious wife, mostly is just his flaring instinct that she's hurting, that she craves safety and providing Blu with what she needs becomes Creed's whole world. Where he once saw his marriage as a farce now has Creed longing for it all to be real in heart and soul, not just paper on paper.

As Creed's and Blu's love for each other grows, so does the threat of impending war. It's soon obvious that the werewolves have falsely entered this supposed peace-bringing marriage just as much as the vampires with each quietly developing ulterior motives that would leave the destruction of the losing species. Difference is, Creed no longer wishes to harm Blu's family despite their foul treatment of her. He wants peace and to make his marriage last for centuries to come but two blood thirsty species that have both been craving war may prove too ravenous for love to conquer.

HER VAMPIRE HUSBAND had all the makings of a great read and honestly I was fully engrossed at the beginning until the third quarter where everything came to an agonizing crawl followed by a lackluster conclusion. I've got absolutely no complaints where Creed and Blu are concerned. They're a fantastic hero and heroine pairing with their story having all the promise of something amazing only to come up horribly short. In fact, I was sad for them because they did deserve so much more.

Blu was a fascinating heroine. I loved the reasons for her quirky and sexy personality. She kept me guessing her motivations for half the book! I was itching so bad to pull off her gorgeous multicolored wigs right along with Creed. Blu is just so tantalizing and her endearing charisma really reached out from the pages, grabbing you fiercely. Her past was incredibly heartbreaking and the fact that she never knew the safety of a good man but instead sought out the least painful of her kind had my reader heart yearning to give her a giant hug. Thankfully Creed handled that perfectly for me.

Speaking of Creed, he was quite luscious and his patience with Blu won my heart with incredible speed. He tamed Blu with sinfully gentle hands and crooning soft words like a cowboy would with a skittish filly he hoped to ride. It was just so sexy. *shudders* I really enjoyed him, I enjoyed them both.

Gawd this book could have been so good. Sigh...

    Disappointed
    By Bonny Bon Bon
I had been searching and searching for this book in all my local bookstores because I read an excerpt at the end of seducing the vampire and it sounded like a great read but hadn't been able to find it so I tried a few online stores but even when i purchased it from there i had trouble so i ended up giving up. Then BAM out of nowhere i found it while randomly looking. After all that searching I was so excited but felt a little bummed once I finished it.
Don't let the 3 stars fool you I did like it I like I had just hoped for abit more considering the trouble i went to to get my hot little hands on it and was disappointed.

Nope, the struggling SEAL came home to Ruin Bayou, Louisiana, to finally deal with his haunting past decisions—not to start a new relationship.

Brynn has enough problems without her hormones going crazy whenever Tristan is near. Her son, Cayden, constantly lashes out at her. Her baby will be fatherless. So…what does Tristan think he's doing, making her life even more topsy-turvy than it already is?

But when it comes to putting her heart on the line, who could be more trustworthy than a navy SEAL?

Come on, baby… You can do it.

Brynn Langtoine crossed her fingers so tightly her knuckles shone white. Six-year-old Cayden had already been through so much in losing his father, he just had to make a home run for his little league tryout. Or, she prayed, for once come close to at least hitting the ball.

The metal bleachers were the only remotely cool thing on this muggy mid-April afternoon. Ruin Bayou, Louisiana, had its nicer points, but an agreeable climate wasn't one. Fanning herself with the parent information sheet the coach's wife had distributed to all team hopefuls, Brynn tried shifting to a more comfy position—no easy feat at eight-months pregnant.

    "Relax," her friend Vivian urged.

"Easy for you to say. Dom not only hits home runs, but sinks soccer goals and makes touchdowns—and that's all before breakfast. Meanwhile, poor Cayden…" Brynn cupped her bulging belly as her son tripped on his way to home plate. "Well, let's just say when it comes to athletic talent, he unfortunately inherited my family genes."

"Stop. Little Cayden's just going through a rough patch. Losing his dad like that…" She added a few clucks to her shaking head.

As was usually the case when recalling Mack's untimely demise, Brynn threw up a little in her mouth.

When Cayden looked to her for reassurance, Brynn blew him a kiss. He might be trying out for a big boy team, but he'd never be too old for some good, old-fashioned mommy sugar.

As the pitcher wound up for his throw, Brynn's stomach churned. Please, please, please, she prayed to her disaster of a dead husband, who had also happened to be one of the most celebrated hitters to ever come out of the state. If you ever had so much as a shred of decency in you, send your sweet son a smidge of your batting skill…

    "Strike one!"

Not only had Cayden missed the ball, but he'd cowered when it came near him. Having grown up watching his dad play from a box seat in Busch Stadium III, Cayden had worshipped the man and the game, literally wearing a Cardinals baseball cap nearly every day since he'd been born. Any sane person would've thought Mack spent his free time playing catch with his son, but nothing could be further from the truth.

    The pitcher threw again.

    "Strike two!"

This time, Cayden had ducked to avoid the ball. Vivian let loose with a low wolf whistle. "Who is that?"

Brynn's gaze drifted to where her friend pointed. A giant of a man strode to the outfield, kneeling to talk to a pint-size player. His faded jeans, white T-shirt and Geaux Saints baseball cap didn't mask hard-edged masculinity. A certain larger-than-life, take-charge essence emanated from the man even as he had a simple conversation with a child. The way the man leaned in, seemed to genuinely listen to whatever the distraught child had on his mind, told a different story from the guy's tough outer shell. His body language said he cared like a father, but Brynn was familiar with most of the little league crowd and was sure she'd have remembered a dad who looked like him.

"Whew…" Vivian was also using her info packet as a fan. "What I wouldn't give to be single right about now."

"Excuse me?" Sean, Vivian's husband, nudged her shoulder. "I'm sitting right here."

"Oh, yeah." She apologized with a kiss. "Looking at that hunk, I temporarily forgot."

Brynn fought not to roll her eyes. Vivian had it all. A great husband who adored her and a perfect son and home. She had everything Brynn had once taken for granted, but now knew she'd never have again.

The pitcher wound up for Cayden's third and final try as he'd already had four other turns and failed to hit a single pitch. In the span of a heartbeat, the ball flashed straight for her son, only to clang the chain-link fence behind him.

    "Strike three! You're out!"

As he scuffed his little sneakered feet off the field, Cayden dropped his chin to his chest. Brynn's heart ached for him. Why, at this age, did Ruin Bayou's team have to be about competition? Why couldn't it be purely about fun and learning good sportsmanship? Once Cayden was old enough to learn the facts about his father, he'd receive harsh truths no child should ever learn. Until then, Brynn wanted to shelter him and hold him close. She'd tried a dozen times to talk him out of even going for this team, but he'd insisted.

He'd been so despondent ever since Mack's death, Brynn hoped maybe for once luck would be on his side.

"He gave it a good try…" Brynn resented Vivian's stab at comfort when she slipped her arm around her for a supportive squeeze. "He's a full year younger than a lot of these other boys. You wait and see, next year at this time, Cayden's going to set this field on fire."

"Give it a rest," Sean said to his wife. "Coach hasn't even posted the team yet. Let's not count Cayden out until this is official."

Though Sean's words were kind, Brynn wasn't delusional. Boy after boy strode to home base, swinging and hitting for all they were worth. Six home runs had been made. Twelve triples. Not only didn't her son make a single hit, but no catches.

When tryouts were over, the coach, surrounded by players and parents, called the numbers of the kids who'd made that season's Ruin Bayou Mud Bugs.

    Cayden's number wasn't called.

While around him, his friends gave each other high fives, Cayden's eyes welled and lower lip trembled.

Brynn took his hand, leading him away from the crowd. "You did a great job, sweetie. Your dad would be proud."

"No, he wouldn't." Her son kicked the dirt in the parking lot. "I'm a loser. Dad hated losers. That's why he left us. He hated me."

Stopping short of their SUV, Brynn knelt in front of her son. "Don't you ever say that about yourself again," she said fiercely. "Baseball is just a stupid game, you hear me? Life is about much more. Your dad—"

"Baseball isn't stupid!" Cayden cried, pitching his bat and glove on the ground. "You are!"

Brynn reached for him, trying to grab the red T-shirt that had been so thoughtfully provided in return for the Mud Bug's fifty-dollar tryout fee, but he was too fast. He took off across a weed-choked field.

She started after him, but a male voice behind her called, "Let him go. He'll be all right."

Brynn turned to find the man she'd seen earlier in the outfield. Up close and personal, he was as intimidating as he was impressive. He'd also inserted himself smack in the middle of an intensely personal conversation to which he hadn't been invited. "If you don't mind, I'll be the judge of what's best for my son."

"By all means." The stranger held up his hands. Hyper kids and their parents made their way to their cars. An audience compounded the awkward factor. "Sorry. Last thing I want is to get into your family business, but I remember the sting of being cut from my grade-school team. Only by my senior year, I'd filled out a little and we went on to win the AA State Championship."

Mack had been on that team. Had this man known her husband?

"Anyway," he went on to say, "your boy might think this is the end of his world, but he'll turn out okay."

With everything in her, Brynn fought a flippant comeback. This stranger had no idea what Cayden had already been through—not to mention the baseball legend he'd had for a father. It was a cruel twist of fate that a sporting talent that should've come to the boy as naturally as breathing had escaped him.

"Thanks for your insight," Brynn muttered, "but instead of letting my six-year-old run away, I'd rather handle this loss by the traditional mom method—with plenty of ice cream and hugs."

"Sure." Hands tucked in his jeans pockets, the guy backed off. "And for the record—I never said either of those things were bad." Then as abruptly as he'd appeared, the stranger melded into the crowd.

Brynn was again alone, worrying about her son, only she now carried the additional burden of being embarrassed by her snippy attitude toward someone who was undoubtedly a friend of a friend and had meant well. She never used to be this angry, bitter shell of a woman, but then Cayden never used to run off crying, either.

Glad she'd worn jeans with sneakers, Brynn chased after her son as quickly as her pregnant belly allowed. "Cayden! Come here, sweetie!"

    "Leave me alone!"

The closer she got, the deeper into the boggy woods he ran.

With sunlight fading, Brynn's stomach knotted. Not only were the woods home to whining mosquitoes, ticks and other biting bugs, but poisonous snakes and gators. "Cayden, sweetie, I know you're upset, but this is getting dangerous."

"Go away! I wanna be alone!"

Brynn wasn't especially prone to panic, but she honestly was at a loss as to what to do. Hands to her temples, she urged her mind to think and her pulse to slow. Her single-parenting books frowned on rewarding a child's poor behavior, but it wasn't as if Cayden had run off with malice in his heart. He was understandably hurt that his friends had the God-given skills to play baseball and not him.

The ground squished beneath her rubber soles and the air smelled dank. Darkness was closing in, accompanied by a cacophony of foreign sounds. Though the ballpark wasn't that far behind them, they might as well have been in a different world.

"Cayden, please, come here!" she called. "This isn't funny!"

When he failed to answer, her blood ran cold.

    Anything could've happened.

Brynn now trekked through sloppy mud, making her footing treacherous. The vegetation was dense, choked with brambles and vine...

    3.5 Star Review
    By Harlequin Junkie Blog
Neither widowed, pregnant Brynn Langtoine, mom to a young son Cayden, nor divorced Navy SEAL Tristan Bartoni is in the market for a new relationship, but when they meet in the small southern town of Ruin Bayou, the sparks fly. "Stick with SEALs and your every problem will vanish," Tristan kids Brynn at one point, and in some ways that pretty much sums things up as the story unfolds: he helps her find her little boy when he gets lost, coaches Cayden in baseball, and generally becomes increasingly involved with Brynn and her growing family as weeks go by. But Tristan has a failed marriage behind him, a young son of his own whom his ex-wife has removed to California, and a career as a Navy SEAL, always on the go and in danger. Under the circumstances, what kind of a husband and father could he possibly make?

Brynn and Tristan are convincing, likable characters, each facing the challenges of past mistakes and second chances, and Alton is excellent at imbuing them and their story with an all-American small town ambience and appeal: "The fresh scents of laundry detergent and just-mown grass and the wholly masculine aroma of a man who'd spent hours working hard in the sun blended into an intoxicating balm that, had it been possible to bottle and sell, might have been called Home." That small town ambience, plus some well-drawn secondary characters (my favorite is Tristan's matchmaking mother), and the emotional connection between Brynn and Tristan with its flashes of passion, are the story's strengths.

On rare occasions, the exposition of Brynn's and Tristan's back stories seem a little labored, and while the alternating point of view between the two of them is effective, the inclusion of Cayden's direct perspective interrupts the flow a bit. On the other hand, this is definitely the story of three people in search of love.

Will this SEAL get his Valentine? Will Cayden get a new dad? Can Brynn learn to trust again? Read the novel and find out!

Mixed review. Starts fine, but deteriorate

Note: Stands alone read. 3rd book in Operation: Family series

EASY READ. Likable characters and a touching storyline. HOWEVER, THE ROMANCE doesn't work on two levels. 1) Bad timing -- after witnessing her husband's murder seven-months earlier, a romance for 8-month pregnant heroine seems rushed. 2) The hero tells her up front he is a career SEAL and must return to duty, so her angry, accusatory behavior when he gets ready to leave is annoying and destroys the romantic storyline.

THE STORY revolves around pregnant widow Brynn Langtoine, moving to a small town with her angry 6-year old son, Cayden. There she meets gorgeous hunk, Navy SEAL Tristan Bartoni, taking a break from his job, his divorce, and loss of joint custody of his son. The book chronicles their attraction throughout the summer, until she goes ballistic when he insists on returning to his unit as ordered.

OVERALL, great characters, but the story barely holds the reader's attention long enough to finish the book. MY ADVICE, hmmm, there are better books out there.

OPERATION: FAMILY books are A SEAL's Secret Baby, The SEAL's Stolen Child, The SEAL's Valentine, A Navy SEAL's Surprise Baby, The SEAL's Christmas Twins, and The SEAL's Baby.

You may also enjoy the complex characters and storytelling of N. Bruhns, A. Stuart, L. L. Miller, R. C. Ryan, or L. Wilde (worst endings ever). For sweet, funny, romances with great descriptive imagery and heart touching angst, try S. Fox, C. Colter, and E. Palfrey.

    Strong start, but loses it
    By Beckymmoe
This novel started out fairly strongly. Brynn and Tristan's respective baggage and hesitance to get involved struck a chord, and their attraction to one another was nicely written. Everyone else's constant matchmaking eventually got to be nearly as annoying to me as to the main characters, though it did have its moments (Tristan: "We got to playing one of Cayden's video games and she beat the pants off me." His mother: "So pants were off?"). Most of this book would have been a three, three-and-a-half star read for me...until Tristan decided that he had to get back to his job and Virginia Beach--which hello, he's a career SEAL, he's going to have to do. That's when it all went downhill, and fast. Brynn's attitude was over the top, immature, and unrealistic. She knew he was career military, and he was always going to go back--he never lied about that to her or anyone. Her response, though...as an army widow, I just didn't appreciate it. Throwing the Nook across the room crossed my mind more than once, but I managed to hold back. At least by that point I was nearly done with it.

There is, of course, a happy ending, nicely achieved by Tristan. It was a bit of an obvious fix, though, and really had me wondering why on earth he hadn't thought of it earlier (*I* had thought of it already, thanks to my extensive reading of Suzanne Brockmann novels!), since it would have solved the initial problem that had him on leave in the first place....

But then of course he'd never have met Brynn. Hmmmm.
