All his life, Jonah Gray Wolf has had an uncanny connection to animals and the power to heal the sick and wounded. It's a lonely life, but Jonah knows he's still being hunted--he can't afford to get close to anyone who might learn his secret.

In West Virginia he finds Luce, a tough but beautiful loner who knows all about keeping people at a distance--a kindred soul with whom he might dare to make a life. From Publishers Weekly
Jonah Gray Wolf comes to a small Alaskan town as a toddler, carried by wolves; as he grows, he displays a remarkable ability to communicate with animals and to heal. When he heals millionaire Major Bourdain from a fatal wound, Bourdain becomes determined to bring Gray Wolf under his power so that he might live forever. He sends bounty hunters after the enigmatic healer, forcing Gray Wolf to stay on the move, ever a step ahead of his pursuers. The chase leads Gray Wolf to Little Top, W.Va., where he meets Lucia Andahar, a loner like him who is being tormented by a sadistic stalker. They fall in love and come to one another's aid almost immediately. When a spectacular rescue makes him media fodder, Gray Wolf is forced to make a stand to protect himself and the woman he loves. Veteran author Sala (Nine Lives, etc.) crafts two exciting leads bound by their love of animals and reluctance to trust people. (Apr.)

Snow Valley, Southern Alaska: 1977

The rangy gray she-wolf, still thin from the passing winter, paused at the edge of the tree line above the valley. As she lifted her nose and sniffed the air, the hair on the back of her neck rose. She could smell the danger. Every instinct she had told her to turn and run, but the pup beside her had needs she couldn't provide.

At that moment the pup whined. When she turned and licked its dusty face, it wiggled with pleasure. As much as she would like to lie down, time was not on her side. She nudged the pup gently until it latched on to her pelt. With a single whine of reassurance, she started forward, confident that it would follow as she started down the gentle slope into the valley below.

* * *

The spring sunshine in Snow Valley was a welcome respite from the bitter Alaskan winter and the months without sunlight. It took a special kind of people to be at peace with a world that had months without sunlight, then months without darkness, but the native Inuits were just such a people. It took more than funky geography and quixotic weather patterns to stagger them. They'd been here for centuries and were at peace with their world.

Today, a brisk wind was coming down from the slopes, whipping among the simple wood-frame buildings housing the hunting camp and the small contingent of people who lived there, popping and yanking at the fresh laundry the women had hanging on their clotheslines.

A bush pilot named Harve Dubois, originally from Biloxi, Mississippi, had a small house on the south edge of the tiny settlement, next to the landing strip, which was the only way in and out of the camp. He'd been in residence for almost twelve years now and considered himself a replanted Alaskan. During the different hunting seasons, he flew hunters in and out of the area with his Bell Jet copter. In the off-seasons, he had a propensity for hibernation, at which times he retreated to his cabin with a case of Jim Beam and a grocery sack full of paperback thrillers.

Doctor Adam Lawson lived on the other edge of the hunting camp. He'd been brought in more than six years ago on a mercy mission when an unfortunate hunter had met up with a pissed-off grizzly. The hunter's gun had jammed, and then the grizzly had jammed him up one side and down the other. By the time the doctor had patched the hunter up enough to be flown out, he'd fallen for the people and the place. He'd come back the next spring on his own and had been there ever since.

A man named Silas Parker was the owner of the camp and lived and worked in a small, two-story A-frame. The lower floor was devoted to a sort of grocery and dry goods store, in which he stocked a wide variety of ammunition and a lesser amount of canned and dry goods. The second floor, which amounted to two very small rooms, was where he lived and slept.

The rest of the residents of Snow Valley were mostly Inuit and had been here longer than God. At least, that was what Harve claimed. Adam Lawson figured it was just the opposite. God had put them here. They'd just had the good sense to stay. The Inuit men were good hunting guides, and a large number of them were often away from the camp with hunting parties for long periods of time, which periodically left the women and children alone.

The recent good weather had spawned a flurry of expeditions, which meant the women were taking advantage of extra time alone to do a little spring cleaning. With the below-zero temperatures behind them, the good weather also allowed their children to play out in the fresh air and sunshine.

Some of the older children were involved in a game of softball. Others were playing tag or hide and seek. A pair of six-year-old twins who went by the names of Shorty and Bubba were sitting in the middle of the road that snaked through the village, drawing pictures in the dirt with sticks.

As they sat, a strong burst of wind lifted the dirt in which they were playing, blowing bits of grass and sand into their eyes. Shorty, the older twin, frowned and closed his eyes, while Bubba, the taller one, quickly turned away, shielding his face from the debris. As he turned, he happened to look up the road. Seconds later, he jumped to his feet, squinting his eyes against the sun, unable to believe what he was seeing. Then suddenly reality surfaced. He grabbed his twin by the hair, and started pulling on him and screaming, "Run, Shorty, run!"

Shorty reacted without question. Together, he and Bubba ran full tilt for their house, which was less than fifty yards away, screaming as they went. Their screams brought not only their mother, Willa, running, but others, as well.

"Mama, Mama…wolf!" Bubba screamed as he pointed up the road.

Willa needed only one look to begin echoing his cries.

"Wolf! Wolf!" she screamed, and began shoving her boys toward the house as the other women began a frantic search for their own children, desperate to get them inside.

* * *

The she-wolf stopped. She heard the screams. She smelled their fear. It was all the warning she was going to get. She wanted—needed—to run in the opposite direction. But the pup's tug on her hair matched the tug of instinct that kept her from abandoning it to an uncertain fate. It was that fierce, motherly instinct that gave her the courage to continue on, moving slowly with her head lowered to accommodate the little brown pup now clinging to her ear.

Silas Parker heard the commotion. Curious, he put down the cans he was shelving and moved toward the front door. It didn't take him long to see what was happening. A big gray wolf was coming into the village. Her walk was slow, and sometimes she staggered, with her head low to the ground. There was only one reason he could think of as to why a wild animal like that would come into the camp.

Rabies.

Silas had once seen a man die from the disease and didn't want to ever witness such suffering again.

He ran behind the counter, lifted his rifle from the rack on the wall, grabbed a handful of shells from a box beneath the counter and began loading the rifle on the run.

"Get inside! Get inside!" he shouted, as he started down the road. He wasn't much of a shot, which meant he was going to have to get closer to ensure a hit, and he didn't want to have to be dodging kids and women to take aim.

Another woman came out of her house with her rifle as Silas ran past. He could hear the unsteady sound of her breathing as she struggled to catch up.

He was still shaking from the burst of adrenaline as he neared Harve's landing strip. The wolf was close, almost too close. Afraid to go any farther, he stopped, lifted the rifle to his shoulder and took aim. Counting slowly backward from five to steady his breathing, he tightened his finger on the trigger and had started to squeeze when the woman who'd been coming up behind him suddenly screamed in his ear, then shoved the rifle up into the air.

"Don't shoot!"

He flinched. Marie Tlingtik's shout was not only startling, but confusing. He turned abruptly.

"What the hell, Marie?"

"Look," she said, pointing at the wolf.

Silas turned in the direction she was indicating.

"Yes, damn it. It's a wolf and—"

The words froze in the back of his throat. He took a deep breath and then wiped his eyes, certain he was hallucinating.

"That is not possible," Silas muttered, then turned toward Marie. "Holy Mother of God, is that a baby? Is it? Do you see it, Marie? Is that a real baby beside that wolf, or am I crazy?"

Marie muttered something in her native language, then turned around and ran.

Silas wanted to follow her, but the sight of that thin sun-browned toddler held him fast.

The wolf yipped. Once.

The gun Silas was holding slipped from his hands and landed at his feet with a thud. He stood, still staring in disbelief as the she-wolf also stopped. Separated by less than twenty yards, Silas watched as the wolf lifted her head. Even from this distance, he felt her gaze fixed on him.

"Jesus, Jesus, Jesus," he whispered as his legs went weak. He wanted to run, but he couldn't bring himself to move. Still, he had to do something. That little kid could barely walk and was frighteningly thin. He couldn't just turn away from this. Even if he didn't understand it, he couldn't let it go.

Without thinking of the danger to himself, he took a deep breath, and started waving and shouting at the wolf.

The she-wolf flinched at the sharp, frightening sounds. She felt the danger as vividly as she felt the wind on her face. It was time to go. She turned to the pup and nudged it forward. It toddled a few steps ahead of her, then stumbled and dropped into the dirt.

Every instinct she had told her to run. Now. But she was torn. The pup whined as it fell. When it began struggling to get up, her instinct was to go toward it, but then she looked up. The human was moving closer. Without looking at the pup again, she turned and began loping back toward the trees.

Left on its own, the pup began to cry in earnest.

She could hear it as she ran. But it was only after she reached relative safety at the tree line that she stopped and looked back. The place looked deserted. That was when she lifted her head and howled. The long, mournful sound spilled down into Snow Valley, then echoed off the surrounding hills.

But it was what happened next that sent the entire village of Snow Valley into shock.

Silas had the child in his arms and was heading for Doc Lawson's house as fast as he could go. He looked behind him more than once as he ran, making sure the wolf hadn't done a U-turn and nipped back on his heels. As he ran, he kept glancing down at the baby, feeling the little boy's long black hair blowing across his face and the heat emanating from his thin brown body. Silas thought the child looked Indian, but it was hard to tell how much was dirt and how much was true skin color.

Suddenly the long, mournful howl of a wolf rode the wind blowing down into the valley. The howl was disconcerting. Silas flinched as he looked over his shoulder one last time, just to assure himself that the wolf was gone.

At the sound of the wolf's howl, the baby grabbed Silas by his full, bushy beard, then twisted in his arms so that he was now looking toward the mountain. The little boy's tear-filled eyes were wide with shock. But instead of crying, he opened his little mouth and wailed. The high-pitched sound was an almost perfect echo of the wolf's howl.

Startled, Silas gasped and came close to dropping the child. If the boy had not been holding on to Silas's beard with both hands, he would have gone tumbling down to the ground. But Silas quickly recovered and began patting the baby on the back, trying to give him comfort as he kept on going.

"Now, now," Silas muttered. "Don't cry, little fella, don't cry."

The sound of Silas's voice was as startling to the baby as the wolf's howl had been to Silas. For a few silent moments, their gazes locked.

It was then that Silas realized the baby's eyes were not brown, but amber, marked with flecks of a yellowish gold, more like the eyes of the wolf instead of the dark-eyed Inuits.

"Damn, kid…where did you come from?" But the wolf couldn't talk and the child didn't know.

Wonderful, Heartwarming Read
By Elaine C McTyer
HEALER is a wonderful mixture of mystery, romance, suspense, and the paranormal. I loved it. It is not only very readable it has a wonderful satisfying story. From the first page to the last, it is very captivating and heartwarming.

Jonah Gray-Wolf, aged 2, is saved by a wolf and brought into a small camp in Alaska, where he is adopted by Dr.Adam Lawson. Jonah has a gift, he is able to heal man and animal by laying his hands on them. One day he heals a millionaire who is hunting in Alaska. This changes his life when the millionaire is determined to capture him and keep him with him so he can live forever. For ten years Jonah has eluded him with the help of his animal allies.

Lucia Maria Andahar has lost everything too. Her whole family was killed in a wreck when she was 14, she was sent to live with an aunt and uncle. Two years later at 16 she ran away and has been alone since. Her uncle's unwanted attentions forced her to flee the only place she had. Now she lives in Little Top, West Virginia, where she works as a waitress.

Two lonely people who have no home, find a home in each other. Lucia has a stalker, someone who is leaving notes for her to find. Horrible notes that say what he intends to do to her. Lonely and scared, but determined to keep what little independence she has, Lucia basks in the warmth and love she feels each time she touches Jonah. But the millionaire has not forgotten Jonah and when circumstances reveal his whereabouts, danger is not far behind.

I loved the warmth and tenderness in this book and I felt tears at the ending. I also wish it hadn't ended, good books seem to end to quickly. Do not miss this one. Good Reading.

4.5 stars - for Healer's hero Jonah
By melindeeloo
Healer is a lovely little romance between the lonely Luce, who was the sole survivor in a crash that killed the rest of her family, and Jonah, who has the ability to communicate with animals and whose power to heal has cost him his family and home and forced Jonah to spend the last ten years running from the greedy wealthy man determined to have control of Jonah's powers. When Jonah meets Luce, coming to her aid and saving Luce's trapped and dying dog, he is immediately captivated by Luce and senses a kindred spirit with Luce because of their loneliness and as fellow prey, because Luce too is hunted. Luce is amazed and a bit spooked by Jonah's unbelievable powers, but though she is drawn to Jonah with a power physical connection it is ultimately Jonah's consideration and gentle kindness that wins Luce.

Jonah is truly a wonderful hero, not the alpha macho guy that his legendary wolfish beginnings might suggest. Instead he is loving and thoughtful and truly cares for others, as you can see in his interactions with both Luce and the isolated elderly woman that gives him a job. Also Jonah's need to save lives, even when it draws the attention that threatens his ability to have a quiet life, shows his selflessness. Yet even with his gentler qualities, Jonah is powerful, and his power can also be awesome and frightening. And to keep Luce in his life and to ensure her safety, Jonah will finally stop running and face down the evil men that pursue them.

Even with Luce's stalker and Jonah's hunters, Healer is a romance first and suspense second. And the wonderful character that Sala has created in Jonah is really makes Healer a satisfying paranormal romance.

Excellent Read - Couldn't put it down
By Mary Boardman
Sharon Sala creates pictures with her words that are unforgettable. She had me from the first page to the last - hook, line and sinker! This lady is an awesome author. I'd buy any of her books, and actually have quite a number of them but this one is extraordinary! Not only does it show the true evil of humanity but also the true good. It's a heartwarming story of Jonah Gray Wolf who possesses a gift he uses only for good. But when he helps one man who in turn tries to capture Jonah to reap the benefits of Jonah's gift, Jonah moves from town to town to keep from being captured. But he discovers love in West Virginia and must risk everything. Keep a box of Kleenex close at hand, you'll need them. Awesome, inspiring and brilliant. Sharon Sala at her best!

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

A FAMOUS UNIVERSALIST MINISTER DETAILS THEIR HISTORY (UP TO 1830)
By Steven H Propp
Thomas Whittemore (1800-1861) was an influential Universalist pastor; he also wrote The plain guide to Universalism: designed to lead inquirers to the belief of that doctrine, and believers to the practice of it. He explained in the Preface to this 1830 book, "This work is a continuation of the History of Universalism from the date at which it was closed by the author of the Ancient History. I have attempted a connected account of this doctrine in reference only to England and the United States..."

He notes, "For although... Universalism was condemned in the [Lutheran Augsburg] Confession, the Reformers were not distinguished by the assertion of endless misery from the Catholics, as they were by maintaining the supreme authority of the word of God, and the right of private judgment. For ten centuries the Catholic Church had asserted the eternal ruin of all those who died out of its communion; hence, the doctrine of endless torment is not a doctrine of the Reformation.." (Pg. 23)

Discussing the views of an earlier Universalist, he says, "The evils that befall us here have a tendency to promote our good. Analogy teaches that the evils of another life will have a like good effect. The creation of benevolence in man is an argument in favor of the hypothesis. For it is not reasonable that God should give us this principle, and leave it forever unsatisfied. The infinite goodness of God is MANIFESTLY an argument in favor of Universal Salvation. So are his infinite happiness and perfection." (Pg. 219)

He says, "These are the traces of Universalism as it existed in the United States previously to, and at the time of Mr. [John] Murray's arrival. But this doctrine can be said to have been then scarcely known; and as his labors were the principal cause of exciting public attention to the subject, and of establishing societies of that faith in different parts of the country... he is justly considered the Father of Universalism in America." (Pg. 318)

This history obviously needs to be supplemented by later works (notably The Larger Hope: The First Century of the Universalist Church in America, 1770-1870); still, it is a fascinating document for anyone studying the history of this religious movement.

There was blood. So much blood.

From her position on the stage, Rhiannon Gryffald could see the man standing just outside the club door. He was tall and well built, his almost formal attire a contrast to the usual California casual and strangely at odds with his youth, with a Hollywood tan that added to the classic strength of his features and set off his light eyes and golden hair.

And he was bleeding from the throat.

Bleeding profusely.

There was blood everywhere. It was running down the side of his throat and staining his tailored white shirt and gold-patterned vest.

"Help! I've been bitten!" he cried. He was staggering, hands clutching his throat. No! she thought. Not yet!

She had barely arrived in Los Angeles. This was too soon, far too soon, to be called upon to take action. She was just beginning to find her way around the city, just learning how to maneuver through the insane traffic—not to mention that she was trying to maintain something that at least resembled steady employment.

"I've been bitten!" he screamed again. "By a vampire!"

There were two women standing near him, staring, and he seemed to be trying to warn them, but they didn't seem frightened, although they were focused on the blood pouring from his wound.

They started to move toward him, their eyes fixed on the scarlet ruin of his neck.

They weren't concerned, Rhiannon realized. They weren't going to help.

They were hungry.

She tossed her guitar aside and leapt off the stage. She was halfway to the group milling just outside the doors of the Mystic Cafe when she nearly plowed into her boss. Hugh Hammond, owner and manager, was staring at the spectacle.

"Hugh," she said, trying to sound authoritative and confident. "Let me by."

Hugh, a very tall man, turned and looked down at her, weary amusement in his eyes. He wasn't a bad sort, even though he could be annoyingly patronizing at times. She supposed that was natural, given that he had been friends with her father and her two uncles. Once upon a time he'd been a B-list leading man, and he was aging very slowly and with great dignity.

He was also the Keeper of the Laurel Canyon werewolves.

"Hugh!" she snapped.

"By all means, Miss Gryffald, handle the situation," he told her.

She frowned and started to step past him, refraining from simply pushing him out of the way. This was serious. Incredibly serious. If a vampire was ripping out throats in broad daylight, in front of witnesses…

"Stop!" someone called out.

Another man, dark where the victim was blond, not quite as tall, his face lean and menacing, broke through the crowd and addressed the bleeding man. "Give in to me! Give in to me and embrace the night. Savor the darkness. Give your soul to me and find eternal life and enjoy eternal lust. Drink from the human soul, the fountain of delight, and enjoy carnal delights with no fear of reprisal."

She was ready to shove through the crowd to reach the victim's side and defend him against the newcomer, but Hugh had his hand on her arm. "Wait," he whispered. "Rhiannon, take a look at what they're wearing and how they're acting, and think about it!''

She was dying to move, but she stood still, blinked and heeded Hugh's words.

The two young women reached for the victim's arms, holding him up as the dark man spoke. One licked her lips in a provocative and sensual manner.

"Lord, forgive me," the bleeding man pleaded. "God, help me, for Drago comes and would have his terrible way until none but monsters walk the earth."

Drago walked forward threateningly, then stopped suddenly and turned to the crowd. He grinned pleasantly, and menace became humor as he said, "If you want to see any more, you need to listen up."

Where there had been silence, as if people were frozen with fear, there was a sudden eruption of laughter and applause.

"Thank you! Thank you!" the "victim" announced, lifting his hands to silence the crowd. "I'm Mac Bro-die, actor at large. The diabolical Drago is portrayed by the illustrious Jack Hunter, and…" He turned to the sensual vixens at his side. "Erika is being performed by the beautiful Audrey Fleur and Jeneka by Kate Del-aney. Please, everyone, take a bow."

They did. Drago was darkly handsome, and both young women—Audrey, a brunette, and Kate, a blonde—were extremely pretty. They, like the two men, were in Victorian attire, but in their case it was Victorian night attire. Beautiful white gossamer dresses, with gorgeous bone corsets beneath, and silky pantalets.

Mac continued to speak. "Please, join us at the Little Theater on the Hill this evening or anytime throughout the next three months, where we're presenting Vampire Rampage, which will soon begin production as a major motion picture, as well. We ask that you come and tell us what you think. Shows start at eight o'clock every night except Sunday and Monday, but to make up for that, we do have matinees on Wednesdays. Thank you!"

He bowed low, lifted his head and waved to the appreciative crowd.

Hugh stepped up close behind Rhiannon. "Actors," he said, sounding tired, as if he knew the profession and its attendant promo stunts far too well—which of course he did. "This is Hollywood, Miss Gryffald. Everyone's a bloody actor. Get used to it. You've got a lot to learn about life out here." He smiled down at her in that patronizing way that made her crazy, and shook his head. "Looks like your tip jar just disappeared."

Rhiannon turned quickly toward the stage. It was true. The lovely little tip jar her great-aunt Olga had made for her was gone. Along with her tips. And they hadn't been half bad today; a lot of people had thrown in bills instead of nickels.

She wanted to scream. Worse, she wanted to run back to Savannah, where so many people—and…Others—survived on the tourist trade alone that they behaved with old-fashioned courtesy and something that resembled normal human decency.

But Hugh was right. This was Hollywood, where everyone was an actor. Or a producer, or a writer, or an agent, or a would-be whatever. And everyone was cutthroat.

It's Hollywood, she told herself. Get used to it.

Go figure that the Otherworld's denizens would be starstruck, too.

"I'm calling it quits for the day, Hugh. I'm heading home."

He lifted her chin and stared into her eyes. "Calling it quits? That's what they sent us? A quitter? It's up to you, but I'd get up there and play if I were you. You can't quit every time there's a snafu. Lord above! We need Teddy Roosevelt, and they send us a sniveling child."

"I'm not a sniveling child, Hugh. I just don't see the sense of going on working today. Since there's certainly no imminent or inherent danger—"

He interrupted her, laughing. "Imminent or inherent danger? The world is filled with inherent danger—that's why you exist, Rhiannon. And imminent? How often do we really know when danger is imminent? Did you think being a Keeper was going to be like living in a Superman comic? You see someone in distress, throw on a red cape, save the day, then slip back down to earth and put your glasses on? How can you be your grandfather's descendant?"

Rhiannon felt an instant explosion of emotions. One was indignation.

One was shame.

And thankfully, others were wounded pride and determination.

"Hugh, I know my duty," she said quietly. "But my cousins and I were not supposed to take over as Keepers for years to come. No one knew that our fathers would be called to council, that the population explosion of Otherworlders in L.A. would skyrocket the way it has and we would need to start our duties now. It's only been a week. I'm not quitting, I'm adjusting. And it's not easy."

Hugh grinned, released her chin and smoothed back her hair. "Life ain't easy for anyone, kid. Now get up there and knock 'em dead."

She looked around the place and wondered drily if it was possible to "knock anyone dead" here. It was basically a glorified coffee shop, but she did need to make something of herself and her career here in L.A.

She'd left Savannah just when Dark As Night, her last band, had gotten an offer to open for a tour. Her bandmates had been incredulous when she'd said that she was moving, and distressed. Not distressed enough to lose the gig, though. They had found another lead guitarist slash backup singer before she'd even packed a suitcase.

Wearily, she made her way back to the stage. Screw the tip jar. She didn't have another, and she wasn't going to put out an empty coffee cup like a beggar.

She could not only play the guitar; she was good.

Unfortunately, given the recent twists in her life, it seemed she was never going to have the chance to prove it.

She stepped slowly back up on the stage. Earlier the crowd had been watching her, chatting a bit, too, but and enjoying her slow mix of folk, rock and chart toppers.

Now they were all talking about the latest Hollywood promo stunt.

Rhiannon began to play and sing, making up the lyrics as she went along, giving in to her real feelings despite her determination not to be bitter that she was suddenly here—and with little chance for a life.

I hate Hollywood, I hate Hollywood, oh, oh,

I hate Hollywood, I hate Hollywood, oh, oh, oh, oh.

Everyone's an actor, it's a stark and frightening factor,

I hate Hollywood….

And I hate actors, too,

Oh, yeah, and I hate actors, too.

Okay, her cousin Sailor was an actress, and she didn't hate Sailor, although she wasn't certain that Sailor was actually living in the real world, either. She was too much the wide-eyed innocent despite the fact that she'd grown up in L.A. County—and had also spent a few years pounding the pavement trying to crack Broadway and the New York television scene. Maybe the wide-eyed innocence in Sailor was an act, too. No, no, Sailor really wanted the world to be all sunshine and roses. And, actually, Rhiannon loved her cousin; Sailor always meant well. And now, according to the powers that be, she and Sailor and another of their cousins, Barrie, a journalist with a good head on her shoulders, were to take their place as Keepers of three of the Otherworld races right here in L.A.

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeaaaah, I hate Hollywood, And I hate actors, too.

If anyone disagreed with her lyrics, they didn't say so. No one was really listening, anyway. And maybe that was the point. Easy music in the background while the coffee, tea, latte, mocha and chai drinkers enjoyed their conversations.

Polite applause followed the song. Rhiannon looked down, not wanting the audience to see her roll her eyes.

At ten o'clock Hugh asked her to announce that the cafe was closed for the night. She was shutting her guitar case when one of the coffee drinkers came up to her, offering her a twenty. Surprised by the amount of the tip, she looked at him more closely and realized that he was Mac Brodie, the actor who had been covered in fake blood earlier.

She looked at the twenty but didn't touch it, then looked back into his eyes.

Elven, she realized.

Six foot five, she thought, judging that he stood a good seven inches over her own respectable five feet ten inches. And he had the telltale signs: golden hair streaked with platinum, eyes of a curious blue-green that was almost lime. And, of course, the lean, sleekly muscled physique.

She lowered her head again, shaking it. "Elven," she murmured. "It's all right. You did ruin my night, but that's okay." She made a point of not looking directly at him. Elven could read minds, but most of them had to have locked eye contact, so looking away made it possible to block the intrusion. And, luckily, the process was hard on them, so they didn't indulge in it frivolously.

"Keeper," he said, drawing out the word. "And new to the job, of course. Sorry. I saw that look of panic on your face. I'm assuming you're here for the bloodsuckers?"

She stiffened. In Savannah she'd been a fledgling vampire Keeper, apprenticing with an old family friend who'd kept the city peacefully coexisting for years, but she'd always known that one day she would take her father's place in L.A.

As she'd told Hugh, this had all been so sudden. There hadn't been a warning, no "Tie up your affairs, you're needed in six months"—or even three months, or one. The World Council had been chosen, and in two weeks a core group of some of the country's wisest Keepers was gone and their replacements moved into their new positions. And there was no such thing as calling the Hague for help. No Keeper business could ever be discussed by cell phone, since in the day and age they lived in, anything could be recorded or traced.

So the new Keepers were simply yanked and resettled, and the hell with their past lives.

"Yes, of course, Keeper for the bloodsuckers," Mac said, his tone low.

"Some of my best friends are bloodsuckers," she said sweetly, looking quickly around. She'd been about to chastise him for speaking so openly, but the clientele was gone and the workers were cleaning the kitchen, well out of earshot. Of course, he might know exactly what she was thinking even without her saying it aloud. Some Elven were capable of telepathy even without eye contact, so she braced her mind against him. In fact, she knew she was playing a brutal game. It cost an Elven dearly to mind-read, especially without locking gazes, but it cost the target a great deal of strength to block the mind probe, as well.

There were a lot of Others in L.A. County. One thing they all did was keep the secret that they were…unusual. It was the key to survival—for all them. History had taught them that when people feared any group, that group was in trouble.

"Same here," he told her. "I'm fond of a lot of vampires."

She stared at him for a moment. He was undeniably gorgeous. Like a sun god or some such thing. And he undoubtedly knew that Elven usually got their way, because they were born with grace and charm—not to mention the ability to teleport, or, as they defined it, move at the speed of light.

Good world building, but that was it.
By rameau
Blame it on bouncing back from a five star book or blame it on taste differences in writing styles, but this book simply wasn't for me.

I haven't read the other The Keepers-series Graham co-authored with Alexandra Sokoloff and Deborah Leblanc, but I did like the paranormal world presented here. The set up was unfortunately--or fortunately depending on your point of view--delivered in an infodump prologue and it actually made me curious about the Others blending in the masses of non-believing humans. More importantly, it made me want to read about an elven character.

However, I was quickly disappointed. The world building I liked--the idea of keepers ensuring the peace among other races of paranormal creatures--but I couldn't connect with the characters. Graham filled the beginning with repetitious lines and descriptions that quickly eroded my interest. As I read further, the less I cared about Rhiannon and Brodie, their budding relationship, and the mystery they were trying to untangle. I couldn't even be bothered to look for the clues for the killer as I speedread through the rest of the book. On the positive side, my disinterest prevented me from absolutely hating the book.

I'm guessing that if you're familiar with Graham's previous work and like it, you'll enjoy this novel too.

Keeper of the Night
By J. G. Hughes
Just as her band gets an offer to tour, Rhiannon Gryffald is called to take her place as an L.A. Keeper. With her two cousins, she is a peacekeeper for the community of Others living undetected among Hollywood's humans.

An inconvenient interruption in Rhiannon's musical career, when bodies start turning up - drained of blood - things become much more difficult. Suddenly, she is forced to investigate her vampire charges, determine if one of them is killing humans, and try to protect her cousins.

All while fighting a mutual attraction to the Elven undercover cop assigned to the case.

As Rhiannon and Brodie investigate a play about rampaging vampires and desperately search for connections between victims, the author throws in a few well-placed red herrings. Are the suspicious characters part of the crimes or just ... odd?

Graham creates a fascinating world of La-La-Land's vampires, shapeshifters, Elven, and more. After all, who's going to notice another odd individual in Tinseltown? The characteristics and personality-types of each species are highly entertaining.

This has been a difficult review to write. Although a lifelong Harlequin fan, this is the first book I've read by Heather Graham. I must have picked the wrong one.

Many of the character descriptions are repetitive to the point of aggravation. Continuity is fairly decent, other than one character who is 'definitely human' when first mentioned and a vampire, several pages later. (No, he wasn't turned.)

What annoyed me most, I think, was the poor use of language. Long, drawn-out, rambling sentences and unclear passages, which required reading and re-reading, abound.

All in all, for me, Keeper of the Night simply did not live up to its potential. By the time I reached the end, I didn't really care who-done-it.

Mad Hatter Reads Review Keeper of the Night
By Amazon Customer
The Keepers: L.A. series is a follow up to The Keepers Trilogy (Heather Graham, Alexandra Sokoloff, and Deborah Leblanc). The Keepers: L.A. consists of three individual books by Heather Graham, Alexandra Sokoloff, and Harley Jane Kozak and follows the three Gryffald cousins who are the new Vampire, Elven, and Shape-Shifter Keepers in L.A.

Keeper of the Night by Heather Graham is the first of trilogy and focuses on Rhiannon Griffald, a musician and the new Vampire Keeper of Laurel Canyon. A Keeper is a human, born into the position and with the ability to draw upon the powers of their charges, and charged with the oversight and protection of a particular faction of the Others.

Rhiannon is quickly thrust into a potential serial killer mystery that appears to involve at least one of her vampire charges. Clues lead Rhiannon to believe the play "Vampire Rampage" may be the key to linking the victims, and she teams up with Elven detective, Brodie McKay, who is already undercover investigating the actors. As sparks fly between pair, they have to solve this mystery before the killer takes another victim.

Graham does a good job world building and the characters are likable. The romance is steamy and the mystery keeps you guessing until the end. I was a little put off by some repetitive explanations, but overall, I enjoyed Keeper of the Night and am looking forward to book two, Keeper of the Moon, by Harley Jane Kozak out in March 2013.

I received an epub copy from Harlequin via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
