Good sequel To CHIMERA
By Tucker Andersen
MINOTAUR - David Wellington
Jim Chapel is introduced as a new series character developed by author David Wellington in the recently released novel CHIMERA. (See my 4/1/2 star review of 8/21/2013 for a discussion of that book.) I strongly suggest that any reader considering this novella first learn Chapel's backstory by reading that thriller.
Chapel is a Special Forces vet who was severely wounded during an Afghanistan tour of duty and assigned to desk duty at Fort Belvoir after rehabbing at Walter Reed Army Hospital. His seemingly bleak future life was revitalized when he was recruited by DIA head Rupert Holllingshead for the mission described in CHIMERA; a mission by the way, in which there appeared to be no reasonable chance of success and little chance of survival. He does manage to survive and fulfill the majority of his assigned tasks despite the seemingly insurmountable obstacles in his path; and while on assignment forms a bond with Angel, his DIA controller and lifeline, who he knows only as a voice in his earpiece or on his cell phone. His capabilities and exploits in both CHIMERA and MINOTAUR border on the unbelievable, but of course that is often the case in the best thrillers, where the reader is simply drawn along by the force of the narrative and the pace of the story.
In MINOTAUR, Chapel is tasked by Hollingshead to meet with Ygor Favorov, a defector to the US from the Soviet Union just before it dissolved. Favorov is a wealthy "businessman" who is suspected of being a gunrunner and perhaps a Russian double agent. After the introductory few chapters the action is non-stop, and all Chapel's talents are again necessary both to keep him alive and prevent a possible standoff between the US and Russia if Favorov is indeed an agent of the Russia government. Furthermore, Favorov's wife and children may literally be caught in the crossfire when it erupts. All details are not resolved, and the story ends abruptly but in a relatively satisfactory manner, especially for cynics regarding our government`s political duplicitousness.
I enjoyed this novella as a continuation of Jim Chapel's exploits, but would have rated it only 3 Stars as a standalone book. It was my detailed knowledge of Chapel's backstory and his previous adventure which provided me a broader context than the summary description in this novella. As I mentioned, this is strong on action sequences, has an interesting plot, but is almost totally devoid of character development.
The author is well know for his zombie, vampire, and werewolf series and short stories, and CHIMERA appears to be a vehicle to attempt to transition to a wider reading audience while retaining the interest of his earlier readers. Even though MINOTAUR is clearly a sequel to CHIMERA, it was released as an ebook before the novel, apparently in an attempt by the publisher to create interest in the character. The ebook includes an excerpt from CHIMERA, as well as MINOTAUR. As ebook readers undoubtedly have noticed, this follows the pattern of the increasingly frequent use of ebook short stories and novellas featuring characters in novels about to be published.
The third book in the series, MYRMIDON, is scheduled to be released as an ebook on October 1, 2013.
I appreciate the ebook novellas as a great way to enjoy the exploits of Chapel, and the $.99 prices are a bargain. But I do hope that the author is also planning some additional full length novels, with the opportunity which they provide for more complex plots and character development. It would allow also time for Chapel's relationship with the veterinarian Julia Taggart to evolve, as was hinted at the conclusion of CHIMERA.

Great face paced novella
By Brian Danforth
This story starts off quickly and then never slows down. This is a good first book for a series and I look forward to reading other Jim Chapel Stories.

but the worst is the amount of wounding and damage and blood ...
By Starchild
A bit repetitive, but the worst is the amount of wounding and damage and blood loss our hero goes through, but never any hospital time, no recuperation needed after 2 weeks, and no lasting effects from all these wounds, but hey, thats what heros are for......
