Georgia—Present Day

Despite the hundreds of years that John Nightwalker had been on this earth, he had yet to feel completely comfortable wearing clothes. And from the look the female bank teller was giving him as he stood in line at the First Savannah Savings and Loan to cash a check, she would have been perfectly happy to help him strip.

John felt her gaze but was ignoring all the signals. Not only was he not in the mood for dallying with a stranger, she was wearing a wedding ring—a big no-no for him. He shifted from one foot to the other, then looked down at the two little boys clinging to the legs of the woman in front of him and grinned. The oldest one smiled back, while the younger one continued the exploration of his right nostril with his index finger.

"Hi," the older one said. "My name is Brandon Dog-gett." He pointed toward the little guy. "That's Trevor Doggett. He's my little brother." Then he pointed at his mother's backside, which John had already noticed was quite shapely. "That's my mama. Her name is Doggett, too."

When Mama Doggett realized her name was being bandied about, she glanced over her shoulder to see who her son was talking to. Her eyes widened slightly as she saw John Nightwalker's face. The smooth coffee skin, high cheekbones, strong chin and nose were telling of his Native American heritage, but it was the sexy smile and glint in his eyes that stopped her breath. She might be married, but she wasn't dead and the man was stunning.

"I hope the boys aren't bothering you," she said.

John grinned. "No, ma'am."

"Daddy calls her Lisa," Brandon offered.

Lisa Doggett rolled her eyes as John chuckled.

The low, husky rumble of his laugh made the female teller lose count of the cash she'd been dispensing. With pink cheeks and a muttered apology to her customer, she began again.

Lisa Doggett, being next in line, finally reached the teller and proceeded with her business. When they were done, the teller handed each little boy a lollipop, which they promptly peeled and popped into their mouths. Lisa flashed John a shy goodbye smile and started toward the front door with her sons in tow.

Being next in line, John moved up to the window, patiently waiting as the teller keyed in some data from her previous customer. There was a moment of silence—a soft, peaceful sound of shuffling feet and the distant murmurs between loan officers and their clients—then John felt the atmosphere change. To him, the room was suddenly stifling and charged with an anger he didn't understand.

"Sir. How can I help you?" the teller asked, but John didn't respond.

His gaze went from Lisa Doggett and her boys, who were on their way toward the exit, to the surrounding customers waiting in line. Suddenly one of the two boys cried out, then turned around and ran. John noticed a toy car in the middle of the lobby and figured it had fallen out of a pocket. He saw the mother's irked expression turn to one of quiet patience as she waited for her son's return.

His attention moved from them to the rest of the crowd. At first glance, no one stood out, and then his gaze fell on a tall, heavyset man standing in line on the other side of the lobby. He was wearing a pair of faded Levi's and a heavy denim jacket. The jacket seemed out of place, considering the outside temperature was in the high eighties. That alone immediately set him apart. The man's lower jaw jutted from his face like a bulldog's—a strong protruding lower jaw that extended beyond the tip of a nose that had obviously been broken more than once. His skin was ruddy, his hair a brittle yellow color. John could feel the tension emanating from him. He didn't know what was going to happen but sensed it wouldn't be good.

As he continued to watch, the big man headed toward a teller, walked up to the window and slid what appeared to be a white cotton bag across the counter. It looked like an ordinary deposit bag, but when the teller's face turned pale and her eyes widened in shock, John tensed.

He could see the man's lips moving, but he was too far away to hear what was being said. All of a sudden the teller's eyes rolled back in her head as she dropped to the floor in a faint. Everyone heard the thud as her head collided with the hard marble floor. The teller next to her screamed out for help as everything ground to a halt.

Wallace Deeds cursed beneath his breath, unable to believe what had just happened. In all the years he'd been doing this, he'd never had anyone faint on him before. He was a criminal, but he wasn't stupid. At this point, his best bet was to retrieve the note he'd handed to the teller and calmly walk out of the building. To his dismay, the note was no longer on the counter. It was on the floor beside the unconscious woman.

"Crap," Wallace muttered, and slid his hand in his pocket, taking comfort from the gun he could feel inside. He glanced up and around, quickly sizing up the number of people inside the bank against his need for dough. He opted for a hasty exit.

But his plan was screwed by a secretary who'd come to the unconscious teller's aid. She was on her knees beside the woman and feeling for a pulse when she discovered the note.

I have a gun. Put all your money in the bag and keep quiet or you're a dead woman.

Unaware that he'd been made, Deeds was already heading toward the door when the secretary stood up and screamed.

"Stop him! He has a gun!"

Wallace cursed and turned. The bank guard was pulling out his pistol and coming toward him on the run. Without thinking, Wallace grabbed the nearest customer by the arm and put her in a choke hold as he pulled out his own gun and fired a shot into the ceiling.

"Everyone on the floor! Now!" he screamed.

The bank guard stood his ground, still aiming his weapon and shouting, "Drop the gun! Drop it! Drop it and let her go!"

John groaned. The hostage was none other than Lisa Doggett, the young woman with the two little boys who'd been in line in front of him.

Bad move. Bad, bad move.

The young mother's panic was evident as she cast a frantic, wild-eyed gaze at her little boys. Trevor, the youngest, began to cry and started toward her.

"Don't anybody move!" Wallace roared, waving the gun at the guard, then at the kids and back again.

John knew the man was a hair's breadth away from shooting someone, whether he meant to or not, and Trevor Doggett's determination to get to his mother was putting him in harm's way. There was no time for John to think about the wisdom of his actions.

In one swift move, he pulled a knife from his boot and leaped forward, desperate to draw the gunman's attention away from the boys, his hostage and the guard with the gun, knowing full well that he was going to get shot. Knowing full well it was going to hurt like hell— but it wasn't going to kill him.

That was the edge he had over everyone else in the room. He'd faced death and cheated it countless times over the last five hundred years and had every confidence in the world that he was going to cheat it again.

When Wallace Deeds saw the movement from the corner of his eye, he swung his pistol. A man was coming at him on the run.

"Son of a bitch!" he screamed, then fired.

The shot went straight into John's chest. He felt the impact and a sharp, searing pain, but he didn't go down.

When Deeds' hostage fainted and went limp, she became a liability instead of a shield. Disgusted, he shoved her aside and squeezed off another shot. But it was the knife suddenly protruding from his chest that sent his second shot into the ceiling next to the first.

A collective gasp rose from inside the bank, followed by a silence so stark that everyone froze.

Lisa Doggett had come to and was on her knees, shielding her children with her body.

The tellers had ducked behind the counter.

The people who'd dropped to their bellies when the shooting started were staring but not moving.

No one ran.

No one spoke.

But the ones who could see were staring in disbelief at the two giants standing in the middle of the lobby—both bleeding profusely—waiting to see who dropped first.

The pistol slipped out of Deeds' hand as he reached toward the bone handle of the knife stuck in his chest. But the moment he touched it, he shuddered. Had someone poured hot oil into his chest? He looked up. People's faces were blurring.

"How…" He sighed, then staggered backward.

John groaned as he put a hand to his own chest. The warm gush of his blood was already slowing as he watched the gunman fall. Wallace's head hit the tile with a sickening crack, but he never felt it. He was already dead.

The bank guard holstered his weapon and started toward John.

Lisa Doggett was shaking, but she was alive and her children were safe.

People were getting up and yanking out their cell phones, anxious to tell their loved ones what had just happened. While on his belly, one customer had videoed the whole thing with his cell phone, and now he was in the act of forwarding it to his brother. The image of what had transpired would be all over the Internet before nightfall.

Horace Miles, the bank president, was moving through the crowd, making sure everyone was okay. When he saw the blood on the front and back of John's shirt, he gasped and yelled for someone to call 911.

John was anxious to be gone before he had to explain why the bullet hole in his chest was already nearly closed. He pulled his knife out of the robber's chest, then wiped the blood off the blade onto the man's jacket before slipping it back into the sheath inside his boot.

The bank guard reached John and took him by the elbow.

"You need to sit down, son," he said. "You've been shot."

"I'm okay," John said.

"The police are coming!" someone said.

Sirens could be heard in the distance. John sighed. He needed to leave—now. He started toward the door, but Horace Miles cut him off. Like the guard, he took John by the elbow and tried to usher him to a chair.

"Please," Miles said. "You're bleeding. Let us help you."

"I'm all right… really."

But the bank president would have none of it.

Lisa Doggett came toward him, hugging her little boys to her legs as she stared at him in disbelief.

"You saved my life. You saved all of us," she whispered. "Thank you. Thank you."

"Yeah… sure," he said, then gave in to the inevitable. He was caught now, and there was no way out of it.

The two little boys stared at him—silent now in the face of what they'd witnessed.

"Mama's okay, boys," John said softly.

Brandon nodded. "You stopped the bad man," he said.

John just winked and nodded. The pain in his chest was fading swiftly, but the sirens were also getting closer. Moments later, a half-dozen police cars were on the scene, followed by two ambulances. A paramedic team followed the police inside, then, at the guard's direction, headed for John.

He sighed. How the hell was he going to explain his way out of this?

"I'm okay," he said as the paramedics dropped their bags and began to cut off his shirt. "I said… I'm okay," he repeated, and to prove he was right, he pulled up his shirt, revealing the wound that was almost closed.

Both paramedics rocked back on their heels, staring at John and then at each other.

"Mister… how in—"

"Er… uh… I studied with the Dalai Lama," John said.

"Learned how to control bleeding and heal myself with my mind. Ever hear of it?"

They looked at each other, shrugged, and then began packing up their gear while sneaking curious looks at him.

But they weren't the only ones staring. The bank president was in shock. He'd seen the bullet pierce John's chest, seen the blood spurting, yet now the wound was nearly closed. He'd seen the other scars on John's chest, too, and was staggered by what this man had suffered and lived through.

Just when John was getting ready to leave, a skinny man in a suit followed several uniformed officers into the bank, paused long enough to question the guard, then headed straight for John, who recognized the type, as well as the badge clipped to the man's belt.

Great. A detective. Naturally nosy, disinclined to believe anything he was told. This ought to be good.

John saw him pause to look at the dead man; then he looked straight at John, who stared back without flinching.

Horace Miles stepped into the silent breach by introducing himself as the cop approached.

"I'm Horace Miles, president of the bank. I saw everything."

"Detective Robert Lee," the newcomer said, then put his hands on his hips and gave John the once-over, eyeing the bloody shirt as well as the blood on John's jeans. "So, hero, what's your name?"

Sarcasm was the last thing John expected. It made him angry. He stood abruptly, well aware that he was now towering over the skinny man's head.

"Considering the fact that right now, my chest hurts like hell, I don't appreciate your sarcasm," he drawled. "My name is John Nightwalker, and I'm not a hero. I was just in the wrong place at the right time."

Lee wanted to be pissed, but the man was right. "Sorry," he said. "That came out wrong. Let's back up and do this all over again. So, Mr. Nightwalker, could you tell me what happened?"

John pointed to the walls where a half-dozen cameras were mounted. "I could… but it appears that Mr. Miles here will be able to provide several different angles on the incident for your viewing pleasure. Suffice it to say, the man tried to rob the bank, took a woman hostage and was pointing his gun at one of her kids. I distracted him. He shot me instead of the kid. I put a knife in his chest."

Believing John had already been tended by paramedics, Lee's next thought was the weapon in question. "May I see that knife?"

John winced as he leaned over, pulled up the leg of his jeans, then pulled the knife back out of its scabbard.

The detective's eyes widened and his mouth dropped as he eyed the wicked blade. It was almost ten inches in length, with its widest point no less than three inches across. The handle appeared to be some kind of bone— maybe ivory. He frowned.

"Hell, mister, that thing's big enough to fight bears with."

"Yes."

Startled by the easy answer, Lee gave John a cool look. "Don't tell me you fight bears, too?"

Alicia Ponte faces all these things and more. While on the run she literally runs into John Nightwalker a native American who is much more than she suspects.

John Nightwalker is old. He has been searching for one man or soul for all his long life and he will not be able to stop or become human again until his vow is fulfilled. When he meets Alicia he immediately thinks he has found that soul for his heart beats heavily and he senses that his enemy is near. But when he looks into her eyes he sees only an innocent soul, but he knows she is close to the enemy. After 500 years maybe she is the way to his revenge.

John's enemy has reincarnated many times but he has never been able to find him during each lifetime, but he knows that the soul returned about 60 years ago. He will stay by Alicia until he finds her father, or her father finds her.

It was an interesting story and the romance was nice. Setting the story in today's world gave it another interesting twist. Good read for the beach, or spring holidays.

My Only Disappointment Was That It Had To End...
By Christa
I thought nothing could top Sharon Sala's supernatural love story 'The Healer'. That is until I discovered 'The Warrior'. From page 1, I could not put this book down. I am endlessly fascinated by anything pertaining to Native Americans and the supernatural, and this had all the elements of a spellbinding story. Heartache...action...suspense and romance. Reincarnation to me is an intriguing possibility, and Sala spun the web so effortlessly in this magical novel that slingshots between the past and present. Sharon Sala is a quality writer from any angle, but this genre in particular is her forte, and I long to see more stories like these from her. She is such a top notch author who doesn't rely on a lot of fluffiness and absurd comedy, or trashy dialogue to sell a story. Instead, she lovingly crafts her characters into those which are recognizable, realistic and intriguing. Love, love, L.O.V.E.D. IT!!

5* Terrific!
By redletter_blackheart
I love Sharon Sala. I don't think that I have ever read a book of hers that I didn't love. 'The Warrior' is no exception. It is 100% terrific, a book I have re-read many a time since first purchasing.

However, that's not to say that I wasn't, at first, sceptical about purchasing the book. I'm not big on 'time travel' types of books. So I kinda first though this was one of those books...until I got to chapter 2.

Boy oh boy. Sharon Sala is a master craftswoman when it comes to her writing. Her characters are always extremely well developed, well thought out and always enjoyable to read. I think, of all of Sharon Sala's heroes, John definitely stands out in the top 2. He's strong, bold, daring, focused, determined...and overall, a man bent on revenge. Yet he doesn't let that desire for revenge over rule his morality, his decency or his attitude to Alicia. I mean, he could have treated Alicia completely differently to the way he did. Sharon Sala could have written such an unlikeable hero with a nasty desire for revenge - but she didn't. She created John Nightwalker.

And then there's Alicia, who has just found out that her father isn't the man she thinks he is. She could have been written as some defenseless, airhead socialite with more interest in spending daddy's money that trying to stop him, but again Sharon Sala stepped up to the plate and created a character who is strong, ethical and who I really loved.

There is nothing bad about this book, truly. I'm so glad that I took the risk and bought the book - well worth every cent! I truly reccommend it as a 'more than once' reading pleasure. I wish more authors were as consistant as Sharon Sala, thats for certain!

Love and Other Scandals, by Caroline Linden

With Love and Other Scandals, bestselling and RITA Award–winning author Caroline Linden launches a scandalously sexy new historical romance series set in Regency England.

Joan Bennett is a breath away from being a spinster. She’s had four seasons without a suitor. After reading a shockingly sensuous book, Fifty Ways to Sin, Joan decides perhaps it’s time to stop being proper and start being sinful, while she’s still young enough to enjoy it. And what better partner than her brother’s drinking mate, Viscount Burke? He seems the type to know how to give a lady a lascivious adventure.

It seems that the viscount has qualms about trifling with a friend’s sister. That’s the way to end up betrothed. And he doesn’t want that—or does he?

From Booklist
*Starred Review* If there is a more annoying lady in London than Joan Bennet, Tristan Burke has yet to meet her. While Tristan’s good friend Douglas Bennet may allow his sister to run roughshod over his life, Tristan is not about to give up the delightful benefits of bachelorhood for a woman who will only stop talking when being kissed. As for Joan, she considers Tristan to be the most infuriating man in London. If he isn’t questioning her fashion sense, he’s interfering with what she reads. Between his constant intrusions into her life and his deliciously unforgettable kisses, it is enough to drive a lady simply mad. Linden, who racked up a well-deserved RITA Award last year for I Love the Earl (2011), soars to new heights of laughter-laced literary fun in the first in a new Regency-set series. Linden’s writing is tartly witty, the chemistry she creates between Joan and Tristan is pure passion, and her subtle incorporation of the Fifty Shades phenomenon into the plot is priceless. --John Charles

Review
"The simplicity of Linden's plot is its strength, making the romance feel real and natural and allowing her great skill at characterization to take the weight of the story." ---Publishers Weekly Starred Review

Not at all like the blurb- a perfect story!
By Amazon Customer
In my mind this is romance at its best. I was very pleasantly surprised to find this book was not at all like the blurb (the spinster does not proposition the rake because she's desperate etc). Instead we a fairly straightforward character-driven romance where the most important plot device is the growing affection between the H & H.

A snapshot of the plot is that Tristan is the childhood friend of Joan's brother. They meet again as adults when Joan goes to her brother's house early in the morning to coerce her brother into meeting "an eligible young lady" at a ball later that night. Joan's mother is behind this. Joan agrees so she can get out of the house and go to an unsavory bookseller. Tristan is staying with Joan's brother while his house is being renovated and is captivated by Joan the first time he meets her. I don't mean lust--but pleasure in the verbal battle between them. He calls her the Fury. She calls him Lord Boor.

Joan is 24 and unmarried-- a state which is likely due to her inability to look flattering in the current fashion and the fact her wit does not flatter the simple-minded. Tristan does dress well and is known as a mannerless rake. In fact he is merely blunt speaking and not much interested in "society".

The chemistry of the characters leaps off the pages. What makes this such a great story is that when they are together they are both better, more interesting and so honest. Oh, and they are both HILARIOUS. It's a master writer who can do this.

Just before writing this review I saw that it got a 3 star for being slow and overly wordy. For me the pacing was perfect and the language in the style of Georgette Heyer. This is the kind of romance which you will read again and again because it's such a pleasure to read the two characters together.

Once again, a perfect romance. Great job Caroline Linden! I am hoping this is a series and can revisit these characters again!

Witty and charming!
By R. Murphy
This was a very refreshing and charming romance -- Joan Bennet, the heroine, has a normal and supportive family (her mother is clearly the head of the family, but also very clearly has only good intentions for her children), friends (which is refreshing, since too often the heroine is apparently devoid of any human connection save the hero), and a life of her own. There are no horrible consequences facing her if she doesn't get married, and her life isn't empty -- just slightly unexciting. She's interesting, funny, and generally appealing.

She and the hero, Tristan Burke, meet each other when he is staying at her brother's house, and the two immediately clash and set off sparks. It was a lot of fun seeing these two characters clearly bring out each other's most interesting traits and really challenge each other, and the book spends a long time allowing the two to fall in love in a very natural way. Each character also has a period of time on their own where they really understand and accept the other -- there's a lovely organic feeling to this book. A little slow to start, but it picks up quickly and is a charming read for a long afternoon!

Pleasant, not too steamy romance
By Sandy Kay
This was a pleasant read, but not particularly memorable. I couldn't remember much of the story a few weeks after I read it. That's not a fatal flaw in a romance -- it just means it isn't one of the stand out stories that I can remember long after I have read it.

At the beginning of the story, Tristan is a bit of a jerk to Joan and I worried that it was going to be another romance where I hated the "hero." Fortunately that was not the case. Although they had a prickly relationship at the beginning, the reader can see how it grows over time and that it is more than just physical attraction.

Speaking of physical attraction, there are only two sex scenes in the book, one of which is on their wedding night. So fans of super steamy romances might be disappointed.

The description of the story on the back of the book and in Amazon's catalog page is not accurate. Joan is worried about becoming a spinster and she and her (also single) friends read some pamphlets called "Fifty Ways to Sin" about the amorous adventures of an anonymous noblewoman. But she does not decide to stop being proper and start being sinful.

This was a pleasant story and makes a nice read, even if it probably will not be one of the romances you come back to again and again. If this is the start of a series by the author, I would definitely want to read the next books in the series.

Catherine Howard: The Adulteress Wife of Henry VIII, by David Loades

Henry’s fifth Queen is best known to history as the stupid adolescent who got herself fatally entangled with lovers, and ended up on the block. However there was more to her than that. She was a symptom of the power struggle which was going on in the court in 1539-40 between Thomas Cromwell and his conservative rivals, among whom the Howard family figured prominently.

The Howards were an ambitious clan, and Catherine’s marriage to Henry appeared to signify their triumph. However her weakness ruined them in the short term, and undermined Thomas Howard, the 3rd Duke of Norfolk's power permanently. Catherine’s advent has to be seen against the background of the failed Cleves marriage and the policy which that represented. Her downfall similarly should be seen in terms of the reformers fighting back against the Howards, and bringing down Jane Rochford with her.

Politics and sexuality were inextricably mixed, especially when the King’s potency was called in question. It is time to have another look at her brief but important reign.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Slave and Citizen, by Frank Tannenbaum

Slave & Citizen deals with one of the most intriguing problems presented by the development of the New World: the contrast between the legal and social positions of the Negro in the United States and in Latin America. It is well-known that in Brazil and in the Caribbean area, Negroes do not suffer legal or even major social disabilities on account of color, and that a long history of acceptance and miscegenation has erased the sharp line between white and colored. Professor Tannenbaum, one of our leading authorities on Latin America, asks why there has been such a sharp distinction between the United States and the other parts of the New World into which Negroes were originally brought as slaves.

In the legal structure of the United States, the Negro slave became property. There has been little experience with Negro slaves in England, and the ancient and medieval traditions affecting slavery had died out. As property, the slave was without rights to marriage, to children, to the product of his work, or to freedom.

In the Iberian peninsula, on the other hand, Negro slaves were common, and the laws affecting them were well developed. Therefore, in the colonies of Spain and Portugal, while the slave was the lowest person in the social order, he was still a human being, with some rights, and some means by which he might achieve freedom. Only the United States made a radical split with the tradition in which all men, even slaves, had certain inalienable rights.

Brutality in Yesteryear.
By Thomas L. Wallace
This book describes in candid, disturbing terms the awful degree of brutality suffered by the Negro slaves particularly during the ocean passage from Africa to the New World. How could one human being treat another with such totally insensitive disregard? Enlightening.

Kiera Cass's Top 10 Princess Movies

In this Amazon exclusive list, author Kiera Cass shares her all-time favorite princess movies.

  • The Young Victoria- The clothes alone make this one rad, but the girl falling for the guy who she didn’t want to and everyone else did… and it turning out perfect? Love it!
  • The Princess Diaries- “I’m still waiting for normal body parts to arrive!”
  • Elizabeth- It’s cool that you beheaded my mom. I’ll make up for it by being a girl and running a country at the same time. Like a champ.
  • Enchanted- “Oh, Giselle! We shall be married in the morning!”
  • The Prince and Me- Gotta love a smart girl who chooses herself. *cough cough*
  • Marie Antoinette- I think I’d go on a crazy spending spree too if my hubby didn’t sleep with me for the first seven years of our marriage. Decadence at its finest!
  • Ever After- Classic Cinderella. Don’t we all want to be the girl who was meant for more than she ever knew? Bonus: hot prince.
  • The Princess Bride- “Anybody want a peanut?”
  • Star Wars- Princess Lea: regal, hardcore, and rocker of wicked buns.

Review
“Deliciously entertaining.” (Publishers Weekly)

From the Back Cover

The Selection began with thirty-five girls.

Now with the group narrowed down to the six Elite, the competition to win Prince Maxon's heart is fiercer than ever—and America is still struggling to decide where her heart truly lies. Is it with Maxon, who could make her life a fairy tale? Or with her first love, Aspen?

America is desperate for more time. But the rest of the Elite know exactly what they want—and America's chance to choose is about to slip away.

Romance, Royalty and Rebels...OH MY!
By Jamie E.
This is such a guilty-pleasure read series for me. I read this book twice in one week just to make sure I absorbed every last detail and could start to analyze what will happen in the last book. This was such a fun read, I can gush for quite awhile.

I know this series has a lot of contractions for readers. Yes, there is a LOT of drama. The same old love triangle between America, Maxon and Aspen is far from over. In fact, it is stronger than ever in this book. Yes, America drove me crazy with her indecisiveness and bouncing back and forth! Yet it is the way Kiera Cass presents the story to us that sucks me in past those annoyances, into the very center of a rich world.

This book is also a bit darker than the first one which is nice. While the first books had me on a fluffy cloud of giddiness while reading this one kept me right where I was but completely riveted to what was unfolding. King Clarkson is a piece of work! And I have a funny feeling this book just scraped the surface of his true character. And Marlee, oh Marlee! I love her character! We also get a lot more information on the rebels. The attacks are stepped up and secrets revealed. This has me questioning a lot of things for the last book. I have a few theories and suspicions although these suspicions has me very concerned for certain characters...

And now for the romantic drama. We last left off with Maxon utterly devoted to America, Aspen pinning after her and America was finally willing to focus on Maxon. Well situations and Maxon's behavior turns America into a yo-yo of emotions for both guys. While I like Maxon, certain actions and responses (or lack thereof) really throw America into a spin. Hence, drama!

So while this series is very frivolous in many ways, they is a level of depth. The fairy tale-esque style to it all has me addicted. Honestly, it is not easy to explain. All I can say, is check this out. You may love it, you may hate it. For me, it sent me to a happy place in my mind that I didn't want to leave.

I've been dying to read The Elite after finishing The Selection the only reason I've avoided it the last few months is because the wait for The One is so long. The Elite starts off right after the end of The Selection with the six remaining girls still all attempting to win over the prince Maxom. America is torn between being with the man she's falling in love with and the man she's loved for so long.

While the girls remain focused on winning the prince's heart around them attacks from both the north and south pushing to end the Selection before the prince makes his choice. As the threat's get more violent the king press's his son to eliminate more girls moving closer to ending the selection before the rebels can end it themselves. As the Selection progresses she will best tested in more ways than she can imagine as all the girls are each tested some in harsher ways than others.

I really love America's character she is very strong, stubborn, defiant, acting rashly. Yet she follows her head and heart even when it's not always the best choice speaking out for what she feels is right. I have enjoyed reading about her adventure in the selection watching how she grows from just wanting to be there for her family to really wanting to be the one. I'm kind of torn on the whole Maxon and Aspen thing, at first I hated Aspen for the way he treated America and now I'm not so sure. As for Maxon we kind of have a love hate relationship, every time I think he's perfect he end up doing something to make me hate him. I tend to avoid love triangles but this seems to be the exception.

The Elite is a fun continuation of America's journey through the selection process. Like the first the elite is very much Revolution meets The Bachelor which I kind of love. I can't stop talking about this series I even tried to push the books onto people I've just met. I love the concept it brings a unique twist into the whole dystopian genre which I also love. The characters are fantastic you can't help loving them even the ones who are oh so bad you just love to hate. I'm torn over America's choice but that's to be expected I just hope The One ends the way I want it to when I figure that out. The Elite is a fast paced story just like the first I finished it in an afternoon so captivating I was unable to put it down. I'm dying for the next book can't wait to see how it's all going to end.

Shallow
By Problem Solver
How to begin this? I enjoyed The Selection enough to read book #2, but was skeptical because of the things I did not like about it, namely the complete lack of world-building. I was kind of hoping Cass had learned from her first rodeo, but I am sad to say that was not the case.

In The Elite, we find America as one of six final girls in the selection and her heart is torn between Prince Maxon and Aspen, her ex-boyfriend who works as a guard in the castle. She goes back and forth, back and forth, never able to full commit to either one, mostly because she is unsure about becoming a princess and the political ramifications that could have. She discovers some hidden truths about her country's history which color her decisions.

In the first book, I liked America. She was normal, a girl with opinions, someone not afraid to stand up for what was right. In The Elite, I found her to be wishy-washy and confusing. She allows herself to be swayed with a kiss or a promise, but then changes her mind in a split second based on circumstantial evidence without asking for clarification. She doubts herself and her ability to lead, which drove me up the wall. She does not trust anyone, despite telling herself she will. If I'm going to be totally honest, she became very shallow and weak. So many dystopian and fantasy novels are making waves because of strong, kick-ass heroines. America Singer is not one of them. She could have been, but her lack of self-awareness just killed any hope of that.

On the plus side for characters, both Maxon and Aspen were stronger love interests this time around. I did not care for some of Maxon's actions, he is still too feminine and child-like IMO, and I was convinced America was going to walk in on Aspen making out with one of her maids, but overall, they were better.

And then there's the world-building. By saying it's pitiful, I'm being generous. I feel like Cass came up with a great concept - this new country with a caste system and rebels who wish to tear it down - but the execution was frankly lazy. There is no depth to it and I found myself rolling my eyes more than once. The rebels that attack the castle multiple times could have been great plot points, but we're given virtually no details about the attack and why they're after the monarchy. Cass tries a little harder by offering us the diary of the man who started the caste system, but again, the lack of depth is frightening. The diary read like that of a thirteen year old girl. I appreciated that in the end, when offered an opportunity to make a difference in her country, America takes a big leap of faith, but I also saw it coming a mile away. It occurred to me while reading that this world of Illea would have been much more successful if it was not dystopian, if Cass hadn't started out with the US as the backbone for it, but if she'd just made it fantasy and started the world from scratch.

I think my biggest complaint is this - this is not a smart book. The characters are not intelligent, they make silly decisions and are generally shallow all around, and the writing leaves much to be desired. Occasionally there was a line I thought was good, above average, but ten or twelve good lines in a 300 page book does not a winner make. I maintain that I think the concept is great and I'd wager in outline form, it looks brilliant, but in reality, so much didn't work for me. The gorgeous cover - whoever is designing this series is a genius - is the best thing going for it.

1.5/5

P.S. - the character names are still terrible - like an episode of Teen Mom on steroids.

From Booklist
Henry follows up her award-winning debut novel, Learning to Swim (2011), with a strong second effort also featuring freelance reporter Troy Chance. Out on Saranac Lake, in the Adirondacks, reporting on the Winter Carnival, Troy witnesses a group of ice cutters as they discover the body of a dead man beneath the frozen lake. It turns out that Troy is acquainted with the dead man, a wealthy, ne’er-do-well Princeton dropout and local playboy who was dating her roommate. But Troy also learns just how wrong she was in her assumptions about the drowning victim when the local newspaper editor assigns her to do an in-depth profile of the man and the investigation into his death. Featuring a strong cast of female characters and a measured pace, this sophomore novel also perfectly conjures the lure of living in a small and beautiful mountain town during a bitterly cold winter. Featuring an independent and immensely likable lead, riffing on the complicated nature of friendship, and boasting a solidly plotted mystery, this may well appeal to fans of Gillian Flynn. --Joanne Wilkinson

Review

“Featuring an independent and immensely likable lead, riffing on the complicated nature of friendship, and boasting a solidly plotted mystery, this may well appeal to fans of Gillian Flynn.” —Booklist

“Sara J. Henry's stellar debut, Learning to Swim, collared multiple major mystery awards. Now A Cold and Lonely Place showcases Henry's powerful new voice. Set in the Adirondack winter, it is both a deeply atmospheric, seductive read and a captivating literary mystery. Put this one on your must-read list!” —Julia Spencer-Fleming, author of Through the Evil Days

“There is a mystery at the cold and lonely heart of this book, but first and foremost, it’s a poignant and haunting story about Troy’s search for the truth behind a young man’s life… This is a powerful, emotional journey for Troy, but ultimately a hopeful one, as she uncovers the stories behind one young man’s traumatic childhood, stories that will finally redeem him.” —BookPage

“[The] sense of severing all previous ties and never truly getting close to people permeates Sara J. Henry's insightful second novel.... Henry explores the complicated nature of relationships while delivering a suspenseful novel full of unpredictable twists.” —South Florida Sun Sentinel

“A chilling mystery about families and friendships.” —Parkersburg News and Sentinel

"[A] haunting follow-up to her Agatha-winning debut, Learning to Swim ... Adding considerably to the compulsively readable mystery that unfolds … is Henry's bone-deep sense of this terribly beautiful place." —Publishers Weekly

"Henry brilliantly draws us into a terrifying but ultimately affirmative novel in which, once again, love, friendship, and the shining truth about who we really are redeems an otherwise hopeless universe." —Howard Frank Mosher, author of The Great Northern Express

Beautifully Written
By OutlawPoet
A Cold and Lonely Place by Sara J. Henry surprised me a bit. I admit that I get a bit tired of the amateur sleuth type of novel. The logical part of my brain objects to almost everything I read. However, I simply loved this novel.

The writing style reminded me just a bit of those Icelandic mysteries - there was something so sparse, yet poetic about the author's style. She manages to paint pictures with words. Partially because of the cold setting - and partially because of the details of the possible murder - the imagery is stark and cold. However, and here's where the skill came in, it was still full of emotion.

In spite of my noted amateur sleuth hate, I loved Troy. Instead of being irritated by her, I was rooting for her. And I really, really wanted to know the truth behind the death.

I can only say that this novel was perfectly crafted. When the truth is revealed, it was unexpected and just a little heartbreaking - mostly because I had come to really like and admire the characters involved.

This book has a permanent place on my book shelf to be savored again in the future.

Left me cold
By Julia Flyte
Set in remote and chilly upstate New York, this is the story of a small town reporter, Troy Chance (she's a woman), whose roommate's boyfriend's body is found under the ice of a frozen lake. Troy barely knew Tobin who had only recently moved to the area - and didn't particularly like him - but she is given the unlikely assignment of writing a series of articles profiling him, his upbringing, life and eventual death. As she investigates, she will get to know both her roommate and Tobin's family better, and uncover some tightly held family secrets. She will also eventually uncover the truth about Tobin's death.

This is a mystery of sorts, but it's a very slowly developing one and I found it quite irritating. There is just so much extraneous detail! It's not enough for her to buy something in Canada, we have to be told that she had obtained Canadian money to allow her to do this. We have to be told the details of every meal, the make of car that everyone drives, have thought processes spelled out in detail. It makes the book feel sluggish. Moreover, I actively disliked the main character (and narrator), which isn't automatically a deal breaker but it does make it harder to enjoy a book.

On the positive front, the book is rich in atmosphere - you feel cold reading it! And I liked the fact that the story doesn't throw in any silly melodramatic twists just for the sake of it. It feels plausible.

This is actually a sequel to the author's first book, Learning to Swim: A Novel, which I haven't read. The events from that book are referred to but this works well as a standalone story.

One of the best I've read in a long time
By Dr. Cathy Goodwin
This book was even better than the author's first, as it seemed more tightly plotted. Troy gets involved in the mysterious death of a young man she'd known slightly, through her roommate. When the roommate emerges as a potential suspect in the young man's death, Troy gets concerned. Her detective work really begins when her editor, George, offers her a dream assignment - an in-depth piece that's rarely offered in local papers.

Troy digs deep. Along the way she gets involved with several local characters and uncovers many secrets. When the dead man's sister comes to town, Troy finds her surprisingly likeable and a friendship is formed.

Henry's prose achieves the quality of literary fiction. Her characters are strong and three-dimensional. She evokes environment so clearly and economically, I felt I was there in this small dark Adirondacks town. Her plot is tight and plausible and the ending is satisfactory.

As it happened, I began reading A Cold And Lonely Place during an unseasonably cold winter. I could feel the chill in the air as the story progressed. I was so engrossed, it was hard to stop, and I was sorry when the ending came.
