With Love and Other Scandals, bestselling and RITA Award–winning author Caroline Linden launches a scandalously sexy new historical romance series set in Regency England.
Joan Bennett is a breath away from being a spinster. She’s had four seasons without a suitor. After reading a shockingly sensuous book, Fifty Ways to Sin, Joan decides perhaps it’s time to stop being proper and start being sinful, while she’s still young enough to enjoy it. And what better partner than her brother’s drinking mate, Viscount Burke? He seems the type to know how to give a lady a lascivious adventure.
It seems that the viscount has qualms about trifling with a friend’s sister. That’s the way to end up betrothed. And he doesn’t want that—or does he?

*Starred Review* If there is a more annoying lady in London than Joan Bennet, Tristan Burke has yet to meet her. While Tristan’s good friend Douglas Bennet may allow his sister to run roughshod over his life, Tristan is not about to give up the delightful benefits of bachelorhood for a woman who will only stop talking when being kissed. As for Joan, she considers Tristan to be the most infuriating man in London. If he isn’t questioning her fashion sense, he’s interfering with what she reads. Between his constant intrusions into her life and his deliciously unforgettable kisses, it is enough to drive a lady simply mad. Linden, who racked up a well-deserved RITA Award last year for I Love the Earl (2011), soars to new heights of laughter-laced literary fun in the first in a new Regency-set series. Linden’s writing is tartly witty, the chemistry she creates between Joan and Tristan is pure passion, and her subtle incorporation of the Fifty Shades phenomenon into the plot is priceless. --John Charles
Review
"The simplicity of Linden's plot is its strength, making the romance feel real and natural and allowing her great skill at characterization to take the weight of the story." ---Publishers Weekly Starred Review
From the Back Cover
True Love . . .
Joan Bennet has endured four Seasons without a singlesuitor or serious flirtation, let alone a marriage proposal. She's had just about enough of being a respectablewallflower and is giving serious thought to embarking ona life of sin, or at least lascivious adventure like the onesdescribed in a popular scandalous book. When she meetsher brother's favorite drinking mate, Viscount Burke,it seems her hopes of adventure might be answered . . .
Is Worth a Little Scandal . . .
Tristan Burke doesn't want a wife, and one can't triflewith a friend's sister without risking marriage. Even more,Joan's the last sort of woman he would ever choose: droll,sharp-witted, and always unfashionably dressed. If only he could stop thinking about her mouth. Or whatshe might look like without those horrid clothes.Or the way he can only win an argument with her bykissing her senseless . . . even though that just makes himwant her more. But more could lead to a betrothal, which he fears—or does he?

Not at all like the blurb- a perfect story!
By Amazon Customer
In my mind this is romance at its best. I was very pleasantly surprised to find this book was not at all like the blurb (the spinster does not proposition the rake because she's desperate etc). Instead we a fairly straightforward character-driven romance where the most important plot device is the growing affection between the H & H.
A snapshot of the plot is that Tristan is the childhood friend of Joan's brother. They meet again as adults when Joan goes to her brother's house early in the morning to coerce her brother into meeting "an eligible young lady" at a ball later that night. Joan's mother is behind this. Joan agrees so she can get out of the house and go to an unsavory bookseller. Tristan is staying with Joan's brother while his house is being renovated and is captivated by Joan the first time he meets her. I don't mean lust--but pleasure in the verbal battle between them. He calls her the Fury. She calls him Lord Boor.
Joan is 24 and unmarried-- a state which is likely due to her inability to look flattering in the current fashion and the fact her wit does not flatter the simple-minded. Tristan does dress well and is known as a mannerless rake. In fact he is merely blunt speaking and not much interested in "society".
The chemistry of the characters leaps off the pages. What makes this such a great story is that when they are together they are both better, more interesting and so honest. Oh, and they are both HILARIOUS. It's a master writer who can do this.
Just before writing this review I saw that it got a 3 star for being slow and overly wordy. For me the pacing was perfect and the language in the style of Georgette Heyer. This is the kind of romance which you will read again and again because it's such a pleasure to read the two characters together.
Once again, a perfect romance. Great job Caroline Linden! I am hoping this is a series and can revisit these characters again!

Witty and charming!
By R. Murphy
This was a very refreshing and charming romance -- Joan Bennet, the heroine, has a normal and supportive family (her mother is clearly the head of the family, but also very clearly has only good intentions for her children), friends (which is refreshing, since too often the heroine is apparently devoid of any human connection save the hero), and a life of her own. There are no horrible consequences facing her if she doesn't get married, and her life isn't empty -- just slightly unexciting. She's interesting, funny, and generally appealing.
She and the hero, Tristan Burke, meet each other when he is staying at her brother's house, and the two immediately clash and set off sparks. It was a lot of fun seeing these two characters clearly bring out each other's most interesting traits and really challenge each other, and the book spends a long time allowing the two to fall in love in a very natural way. Each character also has a period of time on their own where they really understand and accept the other -- there's a lovely organic feeling to this book. A little slow to start, but it picks up quickly and is a charming read for a long afternoon!

Pleasant, not too steamy romance
By Sandy Kay
This was a pleasant read, but not particularly memorable. I couldn't remember much of the story a few weeks after I read it. That's not a fatal flaw in a romance -- it just means it isn't one of the stand out stories that I can remember long after I have read it.
At the beginning of the story, Tristan is a bit of a jerk to Joan and I worried that it was going to be another romance where I hated the "hero." Fortunately that was not the case. Although they had a prickly relationship at the beginning, the reader can see how it grows over time and that it is more than just physical attraction.
Speaking of physical attraction, there are only two sex scenes in the book, one of which is on their wedding night. So fans of super steamy romances might be disappointed.
The description of the story on the back of the book and in Amazon's catalog page is not accurate. Joan is worried about becoming a spinster and she and her (also single) friends read some pamphlets called "Fifty Ways to Sin" about the amorous adventures of an anonymous noblewoman. But she does not decide to stop being proper and start being sinful.
This was a pleasant story and makes a nice read, even if it probably will not be one of the romances you come back to again and again. If this is the start of a series by the author, I would definitely want to read the next books in the series.
